Struggling with ILS Landing

Postby Pancho » Fri Aug 07, 2020 7:16 pm

In my quest to learn to fly and land the B787-8, now I'm having trouble with ILS landing.
This video shows the landing at KSRQ Rwy. 32, ILS Cat-I, 109.70 Mhz,; Hdg. 320, and Alt. 30.07"
In the video it seems that everything is fine until the end after the landing gears are deployed.
I'd appreciate all the help I can get.
Thanks

I'm not sure where the autopilot disengages in the video, but in the Citation I fly, the autopilot automatically disengages at 200 feet AGL.
Is that about right?

In this video the AP is allways active. You can see that the AP button is lighting all the time.
At 3:30 is too less throttle and the aircraft slide bellow the glide slope. The AP pull the nose up to come back on the slope, but A/T doesn't open the throttle.

First impression: too little flaps and too slow.

From the looks of it: getting configured for the landing too late, and incorrectly.

Here's the rough procedure for landing an airliner:

- During your descent, brief the approach. Decide on appropriate flap settings for the approach and landing, and calculate your approach speed and Vref.
- While intercepting the ILS, configure the aircraft for the approach: slow down to approach speed and set approach flaps.
- 5 miles out, configure the aircraft for the landing: slow down to final approach speed (typically Vref + 10 kts), set landing flaps, and drop gear. Set autopilot altitude to missed-approach altitude. Verify QNH and minimums settings.
- When approaching minimums, check: 1. stable approach (constant sink rate, pitch angle, airspeed, and on the glideslope)? 2. Landing gear green? 3. Autobrake and ground spoilers armed? 4. If planning to use autoland, is autoland armed & engaged?
- At minimums, initiate go-around unless all the above checks have passed AND you have a visual of the runway.

It looks like your selected Vref is too low for the chosen flap setting, and you are getting configured too late, which leads to an unstable final approach. Personally, I would have gone around at the "1000" callout.

I've tried a few ILS approaches at the airport you listed, but I think the B787 AP/AT is still a work in progress. It has a hard time keeping track of altitude, which causes all kinds of dynamic interactions. Trying the same approach with B777 and B757 this was as smooth as ever. So I think you've set yourself up for a difficult task sticking to this airplane.

PH Jake, I totally agree with you, I have no problems with the B777, it's a joy flying that plane, I'm going to try the B757 next.
Thank you much.
