Starting at Seaports

Postby LowFiveJoe » Fri Jun 05, 2020 9:14 pm

All,

I know this has sort of been asked before, but not sure I understand the responses. I'm using 2020.1.2 and trying to start at a seaport. Not start the airplane, but selecting a seaport for start up. From KPVG (east coast) the D0 26 says the nearest seaport is 7W8 Irvington Marina. I click "go to seaport" and I wind up in the grass. I've searched for 7W8, downloaded it, and tried with the C172 and wind up in the grass. I'm missing something, but not smart enough to figure it out. Thanks.

As far as the c172p is concerned the ICAO of KPVG is not in the data base so there is no seaport associated with that ICAO.
Nor on a quick search did I see KPVG having a seaport associated with it. If it does, please provide the lat/lon and heading of the mooring position when in the water and I can add it to the database.

A typical entry in the seaport database will look like this
Code: Select all
<!-- Brooks Seaplane Base S76, Coeur D Alene Airport KCOE Idaho -->
    <seaplane n="60">
        <airport-id type="string">KCOE</airport-id>
        <latitude-deg type="double">47.66</latitude-deg>
        <longitude-deg type="double">-116.79</longitude-deg>
        <heading-deg type="double">180.0</heading-deg>
    </seaplane>

So we need to add the following entry to the data base...
Code: Select all
<!-- ????? Seaplane Base ????, Hampton Roads Executive Airport KPVG Norfolk, Virginia -->
    <seaplane n="62">
        <airport-id type="string">KPVG</airport-id>
        <latitude-deg type="double">????????</latitude-deg>
        <longitude-deg type="double">????????</longitude-deg>
        <heading-deg type="double">???</heading-deg>
    </seaplane>

I believe we would also have to add this to the standalone database of the D0 26 for it to work.

I've started at a couple with the seaplane version of the Twin Otter.
I think the last one was at St Maarten. It is SP19.
All the ones I used start with SP.

There are a few airports I can get into the water from the runway, like D-ECHO's version of St Barts.

That's the weird part, 7W8 is not associated with KPVG. And you're right, KPVG does not have a seaport at all. I can't even find 7W8 in the airfield and facilities guide. So I'm not sure why the Do 26 would suggest it as a nearby seaport. Some weird anomaly?

I guess what I'd really like to know is is there a seaport directory somewhere? I'd give S76 a try as in your example, but there must be others, right? Just trying to figure out where I could fly the 172, the Cub, and now the HU-16.

Last question, the seaport database is associated with the aircraft model? Sorry for the very rookie questions, but thanks for your help.

the seaport database is associated with the aircraft model?

In the case of the c172p and the J3Cub/PA-18, yes. I guess we should really discuss this on the dev list and get one database setup.
is there a seaport directory somewhere

This is the database for the c172p and j3cub

Start at any airport using the ICAO in the field
Code: Select all
<airport-id type="string">PHNL</airport-id>

and you can "Go Now" to the seaport associated with that airport. Or use the switch to "automatically" go there on startup, provided your starting in an amphibious or float configuration.

Very cool! I was able to start up at KBWI. I'll mess around with the east coast ports in the db you posted. Baby steps, right?
