EGBJ - missing ILS on r/w 27 (freq 109.95) - SOLVED!

Postby nixnerd » Mon Dec 09, 2019 8:18 pm

I regularly fly out of EGBJ and have noticed the the ILS has recently gone missing from runway 27 (freq 109.95). Its not featured on the map or in the airport data. Can anyone shed some light on this please?

If you by 'recently gone missing' mean it used to work and now does not and you did not install any new scenery then no, I don't think there's a ready explanation.

If you mean 'it is not in FG' then the explanation is that the FG terrain and airport data is as it was in the databases when the last terrain creation was run (which is a few years back). Whatever was not there back then is not in the scenery now, and whatever was missing from the databases for whatever reason also is not there (there's whole airports missing). There's (unfortunately) no magical process which keeps it all in sync with reality.

I just took a look in nav.dat, and there is nothing in there for EGBJ.

I'm parked at the airport now in a DHC6. No ILS signal, but I can build one for you.

I'm finalizing it now. Had to adjust the approach heading. I'm about to shoot the first sim ILS to EGBJ.

Stop back in a bit and I'll post a link here and let you know how to install it.

Edit: Here is the zipped EGBJ.dat file.

You need to find where your FG install wants additional scenery.
Open the launcher and select "Add-ons".
There should be an entry for additional scenery.
In that folder, create a folder named "NavData".
In "NavData, create a folder "nav".
Put this unzipped file in "nav".
Exit the launcher, then start FG again.
If you did good, you should get a scenery rebuild when you open the launcher.

No problem. Let me know what you think. I love shooting ILS approaches. It's more fun when the weather is bad.
FYI, the approach plate states the ILS GS is 3.5 degrees due to obstructions on the approach path. This ILS matches that.
The PAPI lights look like they are set for a standard 3 degrees, so they show you a bit high.

This is the airport approach plate I used.

Extensive airport data at

Edit: This is an odd airport. All the navaids are active only during business hours.

If you haven't seen this line, then download the EGBJ.zip file again. I forgot to put the ndb on it.

Thanks for that SurferTim, that worked wonderfully well.

Your right, it is an odd airport. more details at https://www.gloucestershireairport.co.uk/

A friend of mine has flown light aircraft from there, reasonably often and tells me its quite well equipped and is staffed by friendly folks.

It is well equipped! It also has some pretty hefty noise abatement procedures. Maybe residential close by?
Nice people, but they take their toys home with them.

Yes, for sure SurferTim its on the outskirts of Cheltenham town, and as such is pretty much surrounded by a mix of residential and light industry. Many years ago I was working for a company who were based on a trading estate, probably only a quarter of a mile or so from the airfield boundary, and as such whenever you looked out of an office window, you could almost guarantee seeing a light aircraft fly over at a few hundred feet as they practised their touch and goes :)

As an aside, I noticed while the ILS track now shows up on the FG map and in the Airport info, its appears to lack the textual data at the start of the ILS track, indicating its frequency, is this because such is still absent from within the FG map nav data?

Was interested in this so downloaded as instructed. I confirmed it was in the add on folder came out of FG and re started it did a scenery reload automatically however when I went to the airport map there was no ILS. Have I done something wrong. I followed the instructions and I know the EGBJ.dat is there.

Hi Robertfm,

I'm using linux, so my file path to the EGBJ.dat file looks like:

~/.fgfs/Scenery/NavData/nav/EGBJ.dat

similarly, I've set the FG additional scenery folder to:

~/.fgfs/Scenery

I did notice, it took a couple of restarts of FG before it seemed to notice the change and do a scenery rebuild. Hope that might help.

I already had the folder so I simply added NavData/nav and then unzipped into it. When I shut it down and reloaded it did a scenery update. So bit perplexed. I will see what happens next time I fire up. Thanks.
