After hours and hours of experimentation, I've figured out the AP and FD problems I was having. I can now fly long flights without concern that I'll die on approach. (DH to zero was good, btw). The key is to wait until you're 3000' AGL before clicking on the AP. And be on course! Then make sure you don't engage GS until you're actually AT the point which shows the intercept on the approach plates. Then if the FD clicks on, it won't matter. Thanks, everybody.
