Recommended Aircraft

Postby JDH » Fri Jun 29, 2018 7:41 pm

I am a new user, but I do understand that this gets asked frequently -- I'd love to know the best aircraft found by experienced users here. After doing a lot of reading in this forum and installing quite a few planes, I've not had much luck. So far most of them have been way less developed in comparison with the default Cessna 172 which comes with the simulator. When I say "best" or "developed", I don't so much mean flight dynamics -- for me it's more the lack of bugs, reasonably well done control panels, and in general a decent external appearance. I'm mostly interested in general aviation aircraft, single or twins, and maybe the occasional war bird (F4U Corsair or even an F-86, etc.). As a new user, I am only partially familiar with "hangars". Are some known to be superior to others with regard to the type of aircraft I mentioned?

There is a decent set of military aircraft at opredflag.com; which include the F-15, F-14, F-16 and JA-37 Viggen (also available in the launcher in the standard hangar) and these are well developed and have good flight and systems modelling.

In terms of civil transports the IDG A320 (series) is also well developed;

GA - I quite like the Robin DR-400, Beech 1900d, Q400, DHC-6, Q400

Ah, the J3Cub/PA-18 JSBSim version if you like the basics. It is well developed and also has many utility features, pretty much everything you see on the c172p and then some. The one in the fgaddon repository is complete.

Boeing 707 is nice and very good. Or DHC 6, if You want turboprop. And ofcourse IDG 32x and 33x. Very nice is B777, but flight dynamic is not absolutly perfect. Another very good plane is B737YV.

Thanks for these nice suggestions. I found the Robin DR-400 and have been enjoying that aircraft. I found a photo of the Beech 1900D and it looks impressive. I'll look for the ZIP file and see if I can find it.

I think I found the version you mentioned, so I am downloading it right now. Thanks!

These all seem to be airliners and/or very large planes. Maybe I should stick with simpler things until I "get my wings" <g>.

The DHC6 is a bushplane - sturdy, agile and well-powered, capable of a short takeoff from a dirt strip, doesn't mind a bit of rought treatment. Not much more difficult than the DR-400 in my view - so if you're looking to up the weight you move through the air, you could do worse.

Thanks for the tip -- I look forward to trying it. Regarding this.... as a new user, I always fumble around a bit to find aircraft downloads. I just did that and found a DHC6 on a Github website. Compared to other planes, it's huge (285 MB) -- have I found the wrong file? Do you you have one go-to website for aircraft downloads?

Generally, for stable and supported aircraft, you can download using the in-build download mechanism. Given that there's 400+ aircraft available there, I'm not sure why you're looking to download even more (I've not flown all 500 yet...) but some people are like that, happiest if the options are not more than they can ever fly but ten times more than they can ever fly

You can search the web for all kinds of 3rd party hangars - sometimes you find very interesting things in there, sometimes they refer to an obsolete version of FG, sometimes the material is great but doesn't have a compatible license - every hangar is different - but if you have any problems with such aircraft, by and large we won't help you in this forum. Theoretically 3rd party aircraft may even do quite nasty things (change settings without your consent) - so you're at your own tinkering with them.

Regardless of how many planes are built into FG, I'm obviously looking for aircraft which appeal to me. After about a week of experience with FG, I barely know how to run the program so have yet to try the built-in function you mentioned -- I'll try that today. Similarly, I know very little about 3rd party hangars, so I appreciate your cautionary suggestions.

DHC6 is in the default FG hangar. I recommend this default version.

you don't need a zip... use the launcher and install the ones in the FG hanger... i know the b1900d is in there because i've flown it quite a bit...

so in the launcher, click on the aircraft tab on the left... then you can scroll the list using the default filters or you can change the filters and look again... i generally turn off the filters so i can see all the craft... i have 531 individual directories in my FGAddon's Aircraft directory... many craft have several variants so the count of directories is mainly a base count... there's a LOT of craft available...

anyway, once you find a craft you are interested in, click the [Install] button and it'll be downloaded and installed so you can go fly it...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."
