Cessna 172P tutorial wing falling off...

Postby bearing » Mon Mar 05, 2018 8:49 pm

I'm aware that the Subject title is a bit bizarre but every-time I attempt to start a tutorial with this aircraft there is a crashing sound as the tutorial window opens. When I go to a view, such as helicopter view, I notice that half of my left wing has just snapped off. I have tried removing the software and re-installing but to no avail.

I am running FG ver. 2017.2.1 on Ubuntu 17.10

Cheers,

Rob

Wow, that's a first.

every-time I attempt to start a tutorial with this aircraft

Can you tell me what tutorial and what step exactly this is happening in?

I need a play by play if possible.

It sounds like your doing something that is causing the aircraft to crash.

Once the software starts I click onto help and choose tutorial, from there I pick the tutorial I want - have only used starting, taxi and take-off as yet - the tutorial loads and as soon as it has loaded there is the crashing sound and if I then go to a tail view half of the left hand wing is missing. I touch nothing before this happens so am at a loss as to what is happening. I can fly the Cessna normally with no problems whatsoever, apart from my poor standard of flying.

I'm wondering if it might be a corruption in the aircraft's data. I guess removing the plane and then re-installing might be an option but am keen to hear your thoughts.

Do you have scenery? Does it look like your starting up at an airport or in water?

None of the tutorials let you startup without breaking the aircraft?

Are you using any special startup (command line) flags?

i think an important question is also WHERE... which airport... some have boxes and stuff scattered about and it will break craft when they spawn in that spot... i know that one or two tutorials move you to a specific airport but others leave you where you are to start...

FWIW: it is no corruption in the craft or the sim... it is the damage code working as designed... now we just need to figure out where you are when it is triggered so it can be fixed...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

I tried using the takeoff tutorial and it started me up at a specific airport. No issues.

yes, there is at least one that i know of that is location specific... i think it was LEBL but then it was realized that changing the tutorials for every new release with its new airport was going to be a lot more work than desired... so the team stopped doing that and the tutorials exist as they did at for that release...

I start up from the shortcut on the desktop, not from a command line. The scenery all looks fine apart from I'm not on tarmac/a runway but on grass.

I'm assuming it is starting the tutorial from the same airport as the one the aircraft opens to when chosen, which is Boston Logan and it displays that I am on runway 13 at the tutorial start.

Actually, after having another look it would seem that I am on water. I have tried changing the airport but it still leaves me resting in water and the wing still breaks. The airport is Sabadell airport, just went back to the pre-flight check tutorial in which it told me where I was.

FlightGear needs to download the scenery:
When starting up FG from the desktop icon, you should see this window.
Make sure, in the "Settings" tab, you have "Download scenery automatically" enabled:

Hote this helps

Thanks for the help but still getting the same problem despite enabling 'Download scenery automatically'.

What airport and position are you starting at? Some airports and positions might have stray objects which would buffet your plane about and cause wings to break off.

The tutorial starts at Sabadella but if I change the airport it still does the same.

If your still starting up on water, it is a scenery issue (or lack of). You need to get scenery installed for the airport that the tutorial is sending you to. I use a scenery manager to download scenery because Terrasync rarely works for me.
