atis at one airport not working

Postby hdouthat » Mon Feb 19, 2018 1:49 am

I'm having a problem listening to the atis at a local airport. I downloaded scenery for N40W80 (I believe, I'm not at that computer at the moment). My local airport is KAVP. They have ATIS on 111.60. When I didn't get ATIS, I checked apt.dat.gz and found it wasn't listed. I added the line 50 11160 ATIS to the file. It now shows up under the equipment and can be set, but I get no sound. If I set my location to KSFO, I'm crashed in the ocean (I didn't download the scenery), but I can tune in the atis. It also works at the default airport. Is there something else I need to do?

Also, I'm using real weather. The metar shows up, ATIS just doesn't read it.

I'm going to try one last time. KAVP ATIS doesn't work. In an effort to get this working, I've set up Terragear, I've rebuilt the scenery and airports, and I've edited apt.dat.gz. Is there noone out there that can determine why ATIS doesn't work at this one airport.

AFAIK, ATIS relies (in part??) on a valid METAR... are you getting one for KAVP?

i also note that airvav indicates freq 111.6 for ATIS but the default in FG does not list an ATIS freq... i'll look into using the NavData/apt/xxx.dat form of updating the information and seeing if i can add the ATIS freq to KAVP... then maybe we can go from there... not sure how long but if you don't hear anything in a few days, ping me back...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

i've posted a question on the dev mailing list about this... have not had any response at this time...

it appears that fgdata/ATC/defaults.atis and/or defaults.tower need KVAP added with the necessary data... i don't know the format of these files (yet) so i cannot add KVAP to them and see if ATIS starts working as desired...

more to come...

AFAIK FG can simulate ATIS only on COM frequencies. In case of KAVP the ATIS will be transmitted by the VORTAC LVZ (4.2nm to the south) near the airfield.
FG allways simulate morse code from VOR/VORTAC/TACAN/DME/NDB/LOC.
Until now, its not possible to simulate ATIS on NAV frequencies.

freq 111.6 is not a COM freq? i found that listed as the ATIS freq on one of the airport data sites...

No.
COM frequencies are in range from 118.000 MHz to 136.999 MHz
NAV frequencies are in range from 108.000 MHz to 117.999 MHz

Yes, thats normal.
Some airfields doesn't arrange one more radio for ATIS if there is a NAVaid close to the field.
This NAVaid will be used to send the ATIS on there frequency.
This isn't a problem because every pilot can listen what the NAVaid transmit.
Normally, it is the morse code of the station designation, but in this case the pilot will hear the ATIS.
Beside that, the NAVaid works without differences.

ok, here we go...

i found the following info at the airnav site... https://www.airnav.com/airport/KAVP

Code: Select all
Airport Communications
UNICOM:    122.95
ATIS:    111.6
WX ASOS:    PHONE 570-655-0748
WILKES-BARRE GROUND:    121.9
WILKES-BARRE TOWER:    120.1 257.8
WILKES-BARRE APPROACH:    120.95 ;280-100 126.3 ;101-279 256.7
WILKES-BARRE DEPARTURE:    120.95 ;280-100 126.3 ;101-279 256.7
EMERG:    121.5 243.0
RADAR:    126.3 ;101-279
TRSA:    120.95 ;280-100 126.3 ;101-279 256.7
WX ASOS at MPO (20 nm SE):    120.275 (570-839-1584)

note that the last line says that weather (WX ASOS) comes from airport MPO (KMPO) located 20 nm to the southeast... i tuned the UFO's COM1 to the given freq and was able to pick up the weather data... it closely matched the METAR for KAVP... apparently KAVP does not have live ATIS/ASOS and uses the KMPO station for this information...

IF ATIS is available at KAVP, it will be given on the ATIS freq when tuned on one of the NAV radios... not a COM radio... i did try this but didn't get anything on that freq...

additionally, it seems that airports without a 50 line in apt.dat, like KAVP, only need that line added IF they do support ATIS... i'm not sure if there is any other data needed to be added anywhere, though... my above about defaults.atis and defaults.tower are misleading and should be ignored... apparently those files are no longer used... at least several devs have expressed that since i wrote it...

Thank you both for your time. This solves my problem. I changed my KVAP data from 50 11160 ATIS to 50 12790 ATIS and now I can get ATIS. I'm just using the PHNL ATIS on COM2. KAVP is in the Airports/metar.dat.gz file. It broadcasts over the VOR frequency 111.6. I'm just learning to fly in real life and wanted to practice procedures with the proper radio setup. I normally set NAV1 to 111.6, check the VOR operation and flip the NAV1 toggle switch to listen to the ATIS, Now, I can just set COM2 to 127.90 and flip toggle switch to COM2 to listen to ATIS. Not perfect but close enough. No voice over Nav radios is useful information for anyone else flying where the ATIS is over a navaid frequency.

wkitty, I like your sig. My son is a hugh Pratchett fan.

I have checked now with FG 2019.2.0.
FG doesn't support voice over navaids. I have also set the ATIS to 123.6 MHz for testing and it works.
You have choosen the right workaround. Nice you have also found it. Happy flying ;)

@wkitty42
To hear the morse code on a NAV radio, you should also rise the volume of that device.
For NAV1 set '/instrumentation/nav/volume' to '1'.

Also, in the C172, the nav volume switch can be pulled out and pushed in (shift+click on the knob). In is voice, out is VOR morse code identifier.

@WoodSTokk As soon as I read your post "atis only on COM frequencies" the blinders fell off and the solution became clear.
