New map, plane doesn't take off!!

Postby Skwawkdeez » Thu Jan 11, 2018 5:10 am

Hey, new member here. Been using FG for a while now and have recently downloaded and installed 10X10 format map in Ethiopia (where i'm from) and tried to do a cross country flight in the Cessna 172P.

However, the plane doesn't gain altitude after takeoff after about a hundred feet and keeps descending back to the ground. I've never had this issue while i was flying in the default map of the San Fransisco area. I tried to take off from one other airport in the map but, same thing!

I've also got Atlas installed and while it shows terrain on the San Fransisco area map, its not showing it on the new one.

Anybody got any ideas, or ever had the same issue ? I appreciate any help.

Thanks

Isn't Ethiopia fairly high over the sea level? (And possibly hot too?) Then a piston engine will not develop its full sea level power, and, additionally, you need to weaken the fuel mixture ('m' or 'M' key) to get the most out of it.

@AndersG, You're right.. +7000 ft. Altimeter shows that too (on the ground). Goes even higher when i calibrate it to current i.e. 30.30. I've tried leaning the fuel mixture once i'm up. Seems to get me some more power but no luck altitude wise. Could it really be that the piston engines don't work in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and FG is simulating that ???

In that case, what Aircraft would be a good transition from the Cessna 172, .. that can also fly high altitude and fairly hot weather ?

You would want to lean the mixture to peak RPM: on the tachometer lean the mixture until the rpm stops increasing, then push m three or four times to get rich of peak :)

Then you would also want to reduce the weight, as hot / high doesn't work well. You should still be able to take off, though.

Appreciate the suggestion! Curious though as to how you can reduce weight

reduce weight? remove any passengers and baggage...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Which you do in the Fuel and payload dialog available from (IIRC) the Equipment menu.
Example from the Short S.23 Empire flying boat below:

The C172 should be able to take off from a 7000ft field, but the ground roll will be approximately double that at sea level, and even more at high temperatures.. See Page 5-12 of https://takewingaviation.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/N739EF_172N_POH.pdf

It is a low performance aircraft, not really suited to such operation. A piston engine with a supercharger would be a better choice.

You might also be taking off too soon --> try rotating at 65 knots or more.

A Cessna 182 would work better, being more powerful, perhaps?

I just climbed out of Lalibela Airport (ICAO HALL). It reports to only 1,958 metres (6,424 ft) though. Mixture at 86% worked best. It felt a bit sluggish but I was able to climb easily enough.

Quick test from Skardu (Himalaya, Pakistan) at 7,316 ft - also works okay.

Passengers refuse to leave and keep hanging on to their luggage. I wanted to try it once we're airbourne but the plane won't take off. Can you suggest an aircraft that's not afraid of heights ?
