Cessna 172p bangs around and inverts onto runway at startup

Postby starry guy » Sat Sep 23, 2017 4:41 am

New to Flightgear 2017.2.1 but not to flight sims. Trying the MacOS X version with Cessna 172p on active runway of KFSO at noon. At startup, before powering up, plane bangs around as if in a tornado, finally comes to rest upside down. On tutorial of Preflight checkout, same happens with terrible wind sound between voice snippets.
Weather is clear, wind at 3 knots or less, clear at center of high pressure area. Other settings are for quiet, normal flying. Mac OS X El Capitan on an iMac machine, no other software problems noticed. Anyone seen this happen before?

Welcome to FG (you'll notice soon that it is sometimes somewhat rough around the edges, but also very configurable to your particular needs...)

Does this happen at all airports / parking positions or just at KSFO?

(It seems possible to init the sim inside a solid object, and this is one of the symptoms - at some airports, parking positions may be taken, there may be stray AI traffic,... so checking whether the same thing occurs on a no-name airport without AI traffic is worth your while).

What is happening, most likely is that you have the tiedowns enabled (Options menu > securing aircraft): in stormy weather they CAN do that.

Tried parking place and same banging around until inverted.
Tried Long Beach airport on runway and there was banging around until it stopped but facing sideways on runway, not inverted this time. After much struggle, started engine and ran it up to 2K RPM at full throttle with 50% mixture and parking brake off. No movement. Freedom 2.4 Logitech Joystick works fine. Controls seem to work okay (throttle, yoke, rudder pedals). Just no ground motion anywhere.
Wheel chocks or tie downs on the runway end? Seems unlikely.
Identical Flightgear download in identical machine at friends house runs fine, but he is a balloonist and glider pilot, so is not much help. Any ideas out there?

An interesting idea--with damage enabled and all that banging around and spinning at angles, maybe the landing gear has collapsed? That would make the plane immobile under full throttle.

Why is it unlikely that the tie downs are being used? Change the views by hitting the V key until you get to an external view and look and see if the tie downs or chocks are in place.

what wlbragg said... chocks and tie-downs are maintained craft-side... they don't (currently?) care where the craft sits when it is on the ground...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."
