Randomly "banks"

Postby AVA117 » Sun Mar 12, 2017 7:58 am

I have been flying the DHC-6 "Twin Otter" for a few weeks now...

I still don't know why it randomly banks to the left/right during approach. Sometimes it doesn't happen but sometimes it does. :(

Hi AVA117,
I guess we'd need some more information to help you ;)
-Which DHC6 do you use, where did you download it?
-Are you approaching by hand or are you using autopilot? If autopilot, are you using ILS or HDG/VS?
-At which airspeed are you approaching? Are you flying close to stall?
Regards
Echo

My first guess would be that you simply get too slow, and the aircraft stalls and starts to spin.

Try it with a faster approach (not slower than 70 knots) and don't forget to set the flaps to reduce the stall speed.
A mile of road will take you a mile, but a mile of runway will take you everywhere.

I do the recommended approach speed (60?-70 knots) and set my flaps to full.

I basically do what the checklist says... But sometimes it randomly banks.

Do you hear the stall warning before the aircraft starts to bank?

If you use the version with floats, be aware that it stalls much earlier, i.e. at a considerably higher airspeed.

Oh, and what is the aircraft's weight when it banks?
A more loaded aircraft will also stall earlier than an empty aircraft (low fuel and payload).

I never used the floats version. And no, I would hear it but I will eventually recover after a few seconds it will do it, I also fly on the default loading it has on startup.

Hmm... slowly I run out of ideas...
The only thing that comes to my mind would be that you are experiencing wind turbulences.
Can you check your weather settings?

I'm not sure winds of 5.2 kts will do that to a twin otter lol..
