Demomode for Hardware-Test?

Postby pixel24 » Tue Mar 09, 2021 2:20 pm

Hi@all,

I'm supposed to put together a PC for my uncle so he can use FlightGear. He wants to fly with the maximum possible graphics options. Linuxmint 20.1 is to be used as the system. I know a lot about Linux and IT, but not about FlightGear. Is there a demo mode that automatically makes a round trip so that I can judge the graphics performance.

This would allow me to test different hardware setups without my uncle having to come to me every time :-)

with best

We use nVIDIA Quadro graphics cards here for CAD/CAM under Linux. Are these cards better than the consumer cards for FlightGear?

That will then be flown after, so to speak? Is it possible to display the FPS? That would be really nice :-)

https://www.mediafire.com/file/k6lzg0hm ... gtape/file
here is the flight recorder tape
and you can enable FPS count in view->view options

ok. Loading and playing the record worked.

However, the FPS are not displayed. I have both options:

- Show Frame Rate
- Show Frame Spacing

tested.

yes, it makes sense to use an fgtape for that sort of thing - in the early days of the project, people were using prercecorded flights for benchmarking purposes, in conjunction with different rendering settings.

That being said, Jules has been working on extending fgtapes such that they may also sample/replay rendering settings, if in doubt check back with the developers mailing list.

Are there still several fgtape's somewhere to download? Then I can test different sceneries.

pre-recorded flights are a legacy thing, these days it's indeed much better/superior to use the fgtape mechanism and tinker with different rendering settings, possibly in combination with sampling/logging key performance metrics (such as frame rate, frame spacing etc)

I think there's currently work going on to establish a library of fgtapes as part of the fgdata/fgaddon repository structure, at least there have been some talks to do so to grow a library of fgtapes that end users, contributors and core devs can use for regression testing purposes, and benchmarking.

Realistically, creating a corresponding file is pretty straightforward - you can simply use a flight plan and let the route manager/autopilot fly the aircraft automatically, and then record a corresponding fgtape.

A number of people have previously shared such tapes here, so you could share your requirements (airport/scenery, aircraft) and you might be lucky.

Frame Rate is FPS... the other is frame timing...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

If you're serious about performance, see the built-in OSG stats (debug menu): https://wiki.flightgear.org/OSG_on_screen_stats
