SOLVED with workaround :Joystick not detected by flightgear

Postby cotcot » Sun Mar 07, 2021 10:53 am

Operating system : Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon
Joystick : Logitech Extreme 3D Pro
Flightgear 2020.3.2 (from linux mint snap)
Joystick is detected by the operating system (checked with jstest)
extreme-3D-pro.xml is present in folder /snap/flightgear/common/fgdata/Input/Joysticks/Logitech
No joystick is listed in FG when I open File --> Joystick configuration. The orange name field is blank. The down arrow and reset configuration of refresh joysticks do nothing.

Before I installed FG 2019. The joystick was detected and working well. I switched to 2020.3.2 to get the offical hangar with aircafts installed.

Any ideas how to get the joystick detected in FG 2020.3.2 ?

Thanks

copy the joystick xml to your new FG install from your 2019 version.

Can you run the 'fgjs' application and see if the joystick is detected?

SOLVED with workaround : Joystick not detected by flightgea

StuartC : it did not help. FG data had to be installed manually. I guess that FG looks in the wrong folder. I installed FG 2020.3.1 from the ubuntu ppa. Not everything is working.

zakalawe : fgjs did not show the joystick. After reverting to 2020.3.1 it sees the joystick.

Thanks for the suggestions.

That probably indicates a genuine bug in FlightGear then: 2020.3 series should all behave identically for joystick detection. I'll raise this on the developer list.

Hi all,
I have the same problem as described above by cotcot. Using FG 2020.3.8 through a SNAP installation on Linux Mint 18.3 my [Thrustmaster T.A320 Pilot] is not recognized by Flightgear. The joystick is in the OS and works pretty well with jstest /dev/input/js0.
Is there any setting which can let the joystick appear in Flightgear?
Thanks for your help

What you describe looks like permissions problem. Snap applications are sandboxed to a larger or smaller extent, and may not be able to access the joystick device.
Having not much experience in this particular area I found some reading material:

That makes sense. Thank you MariuszXC.

And this did the trick with the joystick connection:

Code: Select all
 ~ $ snap connections flightgear
Interface        Plug                        Slot             Notes
audio-playback   flightgear:audio-playback   :audio-playback  -
home             flightgear:home             :home            -
joystick         flightgear:joystick         -                -
network          flightgear:network          :network         -
network-bind     flightgear:network-bind     :network-bind    -
opengl           flightgear:opengl           :opengl          -
removable-media  flightgear:removable-media  -                -
unity7           flightgear:unity7           :unity7          -

 ~ $ sudo snap connect flightgear:joystick :joystick

 ~ $ snap connections flightgear
Interface        Plug                        Slot             Notes
audio-playback   flightgear:audio-playback   :audio-playback  -
home             flightgear:home             :home            -
joystick         flightgear:joystick         :joystick        manual
network          flightgear:network          :network         -
network-bind     flightgear:network-bind     :network-bind    -
opengl           flightgear:opengl           :opengl          -
removable-media  flightgear:removable-media  -                -

i think i had to do something similar with GEForce NOW, too... unfortunately it didn't seem to help to get my xbox controller recognized in the games i was trying to play in GFN with my free account :(
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."
