Joysticks on Mac big sur and FG2020 don’t work.

Hello, I have trouble with my joystick on flightgear 2020.3.6 (newest version) On my Mac M1 Big Sure.
The joystick is recognized by the program, but doesn’t react at all.
On my older Mac (OSX Leopard) and flightgear before version 2020, it works fine. Is there a treath to fix it?

This is the second report of issues with joysticks on M1 mac hardware. Unfortunately there may be something fundamental going wrong: eg a change in the IOKit code we use to talk to the joysticks. It appears the are detected fine, but when we try to read data, nothing comes back from the plugin.

I can't tell from your report, if older FG versions (eg, 2018.3.x) *do* work with the joystick on the M1 mac? The joystick code did not really change between 2018.3 and 2020.3, so that would be good to know for sure, to help understanding the problem. Unfortunately it's likely some time before I get an M1 machine myself, to investigate properly.

Further testing the joysticks on the Mac M1 chip with big sur:
An older version of flightgear (2018.3.6) crashed at Startup, so I couldn’t test it.
On an old MacBook (OSX Snow Leopard) this version and the joysticks works fine.
Back to the Big sur, I installed X-Plane to test out the joysticks again. In this program it works.
Conclusion: hardware is OK.
I guess it’s a bug between big sur and flightgear. :(

We didn't yet establish if it's Big Sur or M1 hardware which triggers the bug: I'm going to upgrade an (x86) Mac Mini to Big Sur later today to try and answer that for sure.

If it helps, I can confirm that the logitech yoke and pedals work just fine in Big Sur on a 2014 Intel (obviously) MacBook Pro and FG2020.3.6.

It does help, it tells us the issue is some IOKit glitch or change on M1 hardware, as opposed to a (for example) GateKeeper policy change in Big Sur. It does probably bring me back to checking my credit card balance to buy an M1-based Mac Mini but I'm going give that a little bit of time in case another solution presents itself.
