when i first started, i was quite happy with 10 FPS and a $30US NVIDIA card... then i went a got a $60US NVIDIA card and 20-30 FPS is the norm unless i'm flying a ""heavy"" craft like the 787-8 in FGAddon where 5+FPS is the norm when running with Real Weather, ALS and all shaders except transition (50%) and urban (40%)... even with only 5+FPS, it is still smooth but that's because all the work is being done by the CPU and not the GPU(s)... as such, i have 8 cores @ 4Ghz available but flightgear is not using all of them anyway... i'm sure the craft could use some TLC to update it, the 787-8, to newer tech (canvas screens) and increase its FPS... i see a lot of things like

along with numerous other errors like referencing non-existent properties for archiving and such... but, over all? 10 FPS is flyable... 30 FPS is nicer... anything more than 60 FPS is pretty much wasted unless you have a ""gaming monitor"" that has a high refresh rate to cut down on ghost images as seen on LCD and LED screens... CRTs are still the best way to go, though
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."
