4th gen. i7 or 5th gen. i5???

Postby lomar » Tue May 24, 2016 1:10 am

well, run flightgear occasionally and i'm looking for a new computer as my older one boke, but i have this doubt on my mind, and wanted to hear from someone more experienced with hardware than me.
the computers i've seen in a price i can afford are equipped either with i7 4510U or i5 5200U CPU's(Integrated gpu's). but their comparison seems that they can have almost the same performance, so i can't make my mind. could someone help me with some piece of advice?
ps: i don't know if it helps, but the i5 has an Intel integrated HD Graphics 5500 and the i7 a 4400 one and is 9 months older.

A difficult question to answer. Performance is bassically on par see http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-4510U-vs-Intel-Core-i5-5200U
FG is not optimized for multicore threading, so the slight speed advantage that the I7 would get you will be wasted.
In terms of graphic performance I would strongly recommend having a separate graphics card instead of using the integrated GPU.
I would go for the cheaper i5 system and spend the saved cash on a decent Nvidia GPU

Do you want an advice? so do not take a laptop they were not made for games, get a computer.
Laptop x computer: the performance if I'm not mistaken is 30% lower (laptop).
An i5 is great for games, I have a i5 4690 and a GPU GTX970 Superclocked, can run maximized any current game.

The same opinion, but if you need a laptop for FG, be sure it has a strong CPU (intel recommended), a decent graphic card (Nvidia recommended) and lots of GB in RAM. That laptop may cost like two computers with similar settings.

so, people, thanks for all the ones who helped me with my decision, but i had a raise in my budget so i bought an Acer notebook with i7 5500U CPU and Nvidia 920M GPU.
i hope this gives me some better performance...

well, i'm now able to reach 29-30 fps with latest FG, max specs, 2.0 scenery and some complex aircraft(777 seattle level)and scenery(EGKK for instance). In a densely populated scnery(paris or NY with OSM2City or some amazon forest in 7.0x trees), models and trees may take down fps to 10-15, but only in very specific cases. mostly dense cities(like london or barcelona run in some 25 fps.
it has some odds already known to nvidia graphics cards(mainly textures), but in general it has less bugs than my previous HD4000 notebook.
I would reccommend you to buy an external cooler tho, it makes quite some heat...

mine is just 8gb ram with a cheap Nvidia 920M(384 CUDA cores)
i don't know anything about the 460m, sso i don't know if it's powerful or not
(is it a GEFORCE460M or a GEFORCE GTX460M?)

if it's a 960, you have a better graphics card than mine(960m is a proper gaming notebook GPU)
but i have good news!!!
i was able to run LOWI with osm2city buildings and roads at some 35 fps!!!
that was just unbelievable for me!!!
*Edit:
I was testing with a simpler model, with the 777 i got between 17-28 fps (no idea why it osciated so much) with an average of 21-22.
but it's still much more than what i was expecting!

Not FG but interesting all the same
http://wiki.flyinside-fsx.com/index.php/Hardware_Setup

Processor
A modern Intel i5 is recommended. The CPU is the most limiting factor in flight simulation with FSX or Prepar3D. The most important spec is single-core performance, which will directly affect your frames-per-second.

FlyInside will not make use of more than four cores, so it is better to spend on a fast i5 than a slower i7. At the same time, simulators tend to be limited by the CPU, so spending on a faster i5 rather than a more powerful GPU will result in the largest FPS boost.
