Joystick Alternatives?

Hi, I'm Eric

I Have an old joystick but it doesn't register the side to side axis. Is there any free or really cheap way to control the plane in another way? (The forward/backward axis works).
Can I set it up with the mouse or keyboard controlling aileron?
