in the sim, F10->File->joystick and configure it in there...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

if you follow the instructions i gave, a copy of the default one will be made in your user directory where you can edit it later if you need to but from your description, you should only need to use the in-sim joystick configurater as described...

just in case you didn't understand the instructions:
1. load the sim
2. if the menu bar at the top is not showing, hit F10
3. in the menu bar, the left option is File. click on it
4. slide down to the joystick option and click on it
5. make the changes you desire in the configuration dialog
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."
