My specs are:

Intel Core i7-8700 Prosessor
HyperX Fury DDR4 16GB
Kingston 240GB SDD

I've intended to salvage two HDD at 2TB each from the old Q6600 tower so I'm not overdoing it.

I'm looking at any new Nvidia models as I'm running the Intel grafics at 17 FPS but it's not smooth enough to be able to set up a good approach (try ENSD with fluttering framerates.. the runway was hidden from me).

My tower is a Fractal R6 with a Noctua D15 cooler that lets my processor idle at 4-5 degrees above the ambient temperature, that's not bad with air cooling.

I don't want to overdo the graphics card as I've built a very silent system. For future proofing what card am I looking at (I don't like games other than the SDLpop..) , would I go for the 2080 rtx (non-ti) or will a 2070 keep me happy for like a few years?

Regards, Roger

If you're not running on multiple screens, an older, lower end GeForce card (e.g. the GTX 660) can be enough to have a stable 30+fps. They're sold very cheap (€ 50-ish) on the second hand market but are a big improvement over integrated Intel graphics. For FlightGear, I feel that the RTX 2080 is really overkill at the moment, unless you want to drive big (as in HD projection) or multiple screens, but it 's really making a balance between insane prices and performance.

@andreassen47,

My setup is similar, 8th gen i7 but with a GTX 1080, frankly the gpu won't even reach boost most of the time, an RTX 2070 might give you a couple of frames on average, but Flightgear won't fully utilize it for better or worse, also VRAM usage is less than 4Gb even with Rembrandt.

I would choose an RTX for rendering or other titles, but not specifically for Flightgear.

Yes, there are lower cards out there for easy picking. I would've loved a passively cooled card and not worry about the noise level.

My other tower has a 8800GT but I don't think it could be salvaged. I use Gentoo and when portage sees my card model it decides to mask the driver to 340.107 and it was one of the reasons to build a new tower. Ten years is a lot.

There's a new shipment of the MSI GT 730. Hey now, there's a massive 2GB and it's passively cooled. I don't remember what cards have the driver restriction, is this also 340 driver restricted?

If the need should arise for a different flightsim (sorry) the GT 730 would just be a € 65 worth of refuse and the rtx price should come down, eh. The 1060s starts at € 160 and that money are gone too if I would yearn for a rtx card, tough choice.

This is my first visit here but I've tried Flightgear since 2001 with some Voodoo fun.. I'm starting to get the hang of it now.

i have the GT 730 here... two of them... one with 1Gig and one with 2Gig...

i don't know about any "driver restrictions", though... i am, however, on Kubuntu 14.04.5 which is old and may be why my driver remains at 384.130...

"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

A 920MX runs FligttGear at 30-40 frames per second, but struggles with X-Plane 11.25 - usually 10-15 frames per second. A 980, 1080 etc would probably work suitably with other games as well as FlightGear.

Tanks, just let me know if the 1080 starts lagging, hopefully I could have grabbed one until Nvidia gets their act together.

I had the Kubuntu to show me how to set up the newer grub loader for EFI as I was used to the legacy bootloaders, hey I'm new here..

The driver restriction was "portage" telling me my 8800GT was too old and the latest driver doesn't support that old a card. So when things start to come apart and the newer cards get newer supports like Wayland I can't complain anywhere because I haven't bought a new card.

I had the new tower built in February and the Intel graphics is bugging me. At least this time I could get a 730 and save up to a New York trip. Empirically speaking the price would rise, but how did we get here..

Do you use 920MX? I use 940MX.

So a little difference but you see difference in performance.

I am using GTX960... it seems CPU is more bottleneck for me at the moment. I am using Intel i5 3570 3.4GHz. I am getting anywhere from 40-60. Definitely enough to enjoy!

Kind Regards,
