Why I can't start FGFS

Postby boggiz » Wed Mar 11, 2020 6:38 pm

Hello,
I am newer in FG and simulators in general and without beginning a flight I have a config problem.
Each time I start FG 2019.1.1 I have :
Code (): Select all
Unable to create the user data storage at "c:/users/bernard/Appdata/Roaming/flightgear.org"

Windows 7 Professional (64bits) on SSD 128Go
Xeon E5450 @3,6 GHz
6Go RAM
NVIDIA Geforce GTX750TI

The DOS command "set FG_ROOT" responds :
Code (): Select all
FG_ROOT="C:\Program Files\FlightGear\data"

Are they other parameters to config before starting?

Sorry for my french english !

The error sounds like either no writing permissions or no space on the device. The problem seems to actually be that c:/users/bernard/Appdata/Roming/flightgear.org isn't available - so you need to find out the reason why FG can't write data into there.

as far as the basic operation of the sim goes, no, there are no parameters to config before starting... you should be able to install, load, and fly from the default airport in the default craft...

aside from that, yeah, i agree with thorsten... you need to figure out why your system cannot create or access that directory... assuming that your username has only ASCII characters in it, it should just work unless you're out of drive space or the permissions of your user directory are whack...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Thanks a lot for your response.
I have a lot of free space (74Go) on the C:
I have created the flightgear.org directory by hand. It's OK no permission problem !
But when I launch FGFS I have always the same Error !

is your user name plain ASCII characters or do you have UTF-8 characters in it? the above error message seems to indicate plain ASCII but...

can you paste your fgfs.log file to pastebin and provide a link here, please?

Have you install FG as administrator (right mouse button, in windows) ?

My user "Bernard" is in plain Ascii without trailing space. I verified we never know !
I do no found fgfs.log nor in /bin or /data. I suppose this file was not created because of the error.
@Michat No, I didn't install it with Admin rights. I'll try it immediately.

possibly... click on your start button and type %appdata% in the field... hit enter and your application data folder should open... in there you should find a flightgear.org or similar folder... fgfs.log should be inside there...

Your drive is c:, right? Do you have some anti-virus software which restricts FG write access to the harddisk?

Otherwise I think we're rapidly running out of ideas. FG tries to write its config into a location that should be writable - if it can't write there, you need to figure out the reason and make it possible, there's nothing FG-side you could configure or change I guess, it seems to be your OS setup somehow.

I don't remember if the directory structure is set up by the installer/launcher or by fgfs itself, but you could of course try to manually create the directory - if only to tell you whether you have sufficient space/privileges to do so. Other than that, you could try re-running the installer.

Also, please try to be really specific when posting here, the error message you posted says "Roming", whereas it is more likely to actually read "Roaming". If in doubt, post screen shots here.
Since that alone could be the issue, depending on your other settings.
Please don't send support requests by PM, instead post your questions on the forum so that all users can contribute and benefit

Thank's at all for your interest of my problem.

When I launch runfgfs.bat the DOS box says that:
C:\Program Files\FlightGear\data>"C:\Program Files\FlightGear"\BIN\FGFS.EXE
0.01 [WARN]:io directory creation failed for 'C:': File exists
13.12 [WARN]:general SGSubsystemMgr::remove: not found: scenery

File Exists !!! It is not possible because FGFS can't create it and when I create that directory by hand at the good place FGFS does not see it.
This error is send before the launcher was starting because if I start FGFS.exe --Help I never see the help but always the same problem:
"Unable to create the user data storage at "c:/users/bernard/Appdata/Roaming/flightgear.org"

please post the contents of this runfgfs.bat file (in code tags) along with your full command line...

eg:
Code: Select all
bat file code here
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.

This code is provided in /Data is not mine.
I write nothing else than Runfgfs.bat without parameters

Code: Select all
REM @ECHO OFF

REM Skip ahead to CONT1 if FG_ROOT has a value
IF NOT %FG_ROOT%.==. GOTO CONT1

SET FG_ROOT=.

:CONT1

REM Check for the existance of the executable
IF NOT EXIST %FG_ROOT%\BIN\FGFS.EXE GOTO ERROR1

REM Now that FG_ROOT has been set, run the program
ECHO FG_ROOT = %FG_ROOT%
%FG_ROOT%\BIN\FGFS.EXE %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9

GOTO END

:ERROR1
ECHO Cannot find %FG_ROOT%\BIN\FGFS.EXE
GOTO END

:END

I tried to boot in Safe Mode : same error ...

In Summary:
- All my FlightGear was installed with Admin rights.
- No problem to create, by hand, the Directory flightgear.org in "C:\Users\Bernard\AppData\Roaming"

Someone could tell to me what is the part of the source code concerned ?
With some chance may be ...
