FG Freezes

Postby overlord » Tue Mar 06, 2018 12:34 am

The computer I am using is pretty powerful with plenty of ram. DCS runs pretty quickly on it. Thought I would give FG a try, but it hangs every time I run it. I've tried the troubleshooting in the wiki, and if I load it in safe mode (for lack of better term) I am able to fly the ufo around with sea below and sky above.

I have tried multiple planes and they all freeze up as soon as the cockpit shows.

Any ideas?

Hi there,
What are your specifications specifically? Given you can run DCS which has fairly high system requirements, FlightGear definitely shouldn't do that (I know of people who run it using i3s and Intel graphics cards successfully) - thos could be a driver error.

Stupid question, but is the 'start paused' checkbutton marked in the launcher by chance? The whole thing sounds so wildly out of place, it must be something rather simple.

in addition to the above, i'm also wondering if the OP's FG is downloading scenery and what they are seeing is the splash screen with the blue activity indicator bar at the bottom of the screen not moving and they give up too fast not realizing that they may be downloading some 20Meg or more of scenery for their chosen startup airport...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Ok, more info. Here are specs on my rig:

Specification Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-1650 v3 @ 3.50GHz
Number of cores 6 (max 6)

Memory Type DDR4
Memory Size 32 GBytes

Name NVIDIA Quadro K5200
Memory size 8 GB
Memory type GDDR5

Windows Version Microsoft Windows 7 (6.1) Professional 64-bit Service Pack 1 (Build 7601)
DirectX Version 11.0

I have tried all sorts of things, but if I run from the desktop icon, the launcher works fine, I can install planes, and access all of the limited settings, but when I fly from there, it always freezes. Usually around the time the options bar at the top shows up. I was able to run once this morning, but no luck after that. I've looked through the log file and there are no errors, it just stops. I'd be happy to post the log if anyone thinks it will help.

The Nividia Quadro, IIRC, and definitely your CPU is more for workstation than gaming.
Just to confirm that you definitely did not start paused.

I did not start paused.

Besides, if it was just pause, I would be able to unpause it, no?

Yes, but since we're not sitting in front of your computer, we can't know whether you tried to unpause or similar.

When you describe freeze - what is it you see? A splash screen? A cockpit? Can you see visual mouse pointer movement? For how long did you wait to determine that it had frozen?

The entire program is frozen, sometimes it shows the cockpit, sometimes it doesn't make it that far. By frozen, I mean that I have to use task manager to kill the process. Usually, if I move another window in front of FG, it will do that weird thing where the front window leaves traces behind it (I know I'm not describing that very well,. hope you get what I'm describing) I have let the program sit in its frozen state for about half an hour before finally killing it.

Have you tried the old chestnut of clearing the %appdata% so it forces Flightgear to rebuild? I do this as a matter of course everytime I have an issue, as this tends to cover a multitude of "sins" and 9 times out of 10 will sort any problems out. I tend to just do it BEFORE asking any questions on the forum, as if it cures the problem all well and good and saves a lot of time in the process waiting for answers!!! Give It a go it may work with your problem, It might not, but you haven't lost anything by trying!

Just my 2 cents, given you've got a multicore proc, you can try to change the proc affinity for the running FG, iirc FG start always tied to the core number one.

I would have thought the more processors you can utilise the less stress it will place on the machine? I have a quad core if I switch off (any) processor cores my F/G slows to a crawl!

I don't think the CPU is the problem. I'm running FG on a Xeon E3-1230v3 without any problems - OS WIN7-64.
From past experience with Quadro cards I do recall some difficulties however. They can be picky with Open-GL applications.
Your Quadro card has a GK105 GPU which translates to a GTX760 in Nvidia's gaming solutions.
I don't know if it's still possible but in the past you could 'drive' a Quadro card with 'gaming' drivers. (de-Install the quadro driver first)
Try the 378.66 version. It's older, yes, but run's flawless without extra garbage and instabilities that Nvidia came up with in later versions.
You might give it a try.
BTW the log shows nothing extraordinary/wrong.

Cheers /Frans
