Ubuntu upgrade from 17.10 to 18.04

Postby hans05 » Tue May 08, 2018 3:40 pm

Has anyone already tried to upgrade from Ubuntu 17.10 to 18.04? This should upgrade FG from 17.2.1 to 18.1.1 and I would be happy to learn

  • Will the fgdata directory be overwritten (/usr/share/games/flightgear/)?
  • I assume no, but then, will I have to do manual work to fgdata to "really" upgrade FG?
  • Are there any other issues? I read from other posts that generally Linux and 18.1.1 are not always the best friends....

Thanks for any information!

Regardless of whether you're using my PPA or the official repos, your version of Flightgear will be updated to 2018.1.1 when you upgrade to Ubuntu 18.04. This includes the application and the data files.

If you compiled Flightgear yourself, then you will need to update Flightgear yourself.

just a reminder: please use the entire version number... do not shorten it... the current release version is 2018.1.1... not 18.1.1... thanks! ;)

"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

On the laptop I had LUbuntu 14.04 LTS, and made upgrade FG 2017.3.1 to FG 2018.1.1 from saiarcot895's PPA, when this new FG arrived. And found problem - FG 2018.1.1 for Ubuntu 14.04 was compiled without launcher, because QT modules of the Ubuntu 14 was too old. I reinstalled old 14.04 to 17.10.1, installed FG 2018.1.1. Launcher was here, but aircraft tab was completly blank. Next step - reinstall LUbuntu 17.10.1 to 18.04 daily, launcher is OK, but tab aircraft was blank again. Then I tested FG 2018.2.0 from daily PPA, again no success. I reverted FG back to stable release and found solution - manualy installed packages qtdeclarative5-qtquick2-plugin and qml-module-qtquick-window2. But Ubuntu instalation was garbaged with my previous attempts to solve launcher problem and final version LUbuntu 18.04 LTS arrived on the scene, again reinstalled laptop to this fresh new version, installed FG 2018.1.1, added missing packages and all works perfect. There is 1 minor bug - color of the OSG texts is sometime wrong - for example IDG's A3xx family Baro pressure, speed selector etc, or Concorde's INS displays has wrong color.

On my PC I made reinstall from LUbuntu 17.10.1 to final 18.04 LTS, installed FG 2018.1.1, added missing packages and all is OK, except OSG text colors.
