FlightGear and RC Spektrum radio

Postby Aigle Royal » Sun Dec 17, 2017 2:16 pm

To learn piloting my RC flying wing I would like to use my Spektrum 6i TX radio and an OrangeRx DSMX/DSM2 Compatible USB Dongle for Flight Simulator on my Ubuntu 17 machine.
How do I do that please?
Installing FlightGear with Ubuntu launcher or with apt-get should be no problem.
Using USB dongle should be no problem.
How do I simulate my flying wing, (a home made Plouharn Aile), with FlightGear?
And when I want to switch to an other RC model, how do I do it please?

Installing FlightGear 3.4.0-3ubuntu1 with apt-get went without any problem.
I now have an icon to start it.
It opens up with a C172P aircraft.
How do I change this aircraft please?
I downloaded 2 aircrafts: ATI-Resolution and Rascal.
I unzipped them and put them in .fgfs/Aircraft/
But I cannot see anywhere a possibility to switch to one of these aircrafts.
Also in usr/share/games/flightgear/Aircraft/ I have 19 aircrafts installed.
None of them show up anywhere in the FlghtGear application.
What do I have to do to have the possibility to change C172P please?
Any answer to my first message would also be appreciated.
English or french.

The standard Ubuntu repository has an old version.
I recommend using the method describes in the Wiki under Fresh Install. This will get you the latest version 2017.3.1 with integrated launcher. Easy to install new aircraft and much more.

Thanks 007.
I did follow http://wiki.flightgear.org/Howto:Instal ... sh_install
This and various other attempts helped a lot.

fgfs and fgrun are separate applications and I start them separately. Is this the normal way?
Why isn’t only one application to start?

fgrun gives me now the possibility to choose one of the aeroplanes I downloaded.
But on the runway I still have the default Cessna.

fgrun is the old launcher. Do not use that.

To start the latest FG version. Either launch FG clicking the dash icon or use:
Code: Select all
fgfs --launcher

Only fgfs launches FG with the latest saved settings. In your case the default settings.

What a change with fgfs --launcher!
I now have to explore this new starting point and it looks very promising.
Why isn't explained anywhere?

The idea to run FG is to be able to train piloting an r/c plane with transmitter USB connected to my Ubuntu machine. It is still far away, but getting slowly closer!

Probably the documentation is too old. Where did you read about fgfs and fgrun? In the wiki?

But the main reason is that if you use the desktop icon under Windows, Ubuntu and OSX it starts with the fgfs --launcher command. Most users* just click the icon to start the program.

* I guess
