C172 Nice Screenshots needed

Postby Michat » Tue Jan 19, 2021 8:20 pm

We are asking for C172 nice Screenshots to use in the FGInstaller. The current picture is gonna be replaced for a better one with antialiasing.

Considerations

Best quality ( high antialiasing filter )

We'll follow the rule : " more vertical size than horizontal " The final size will be 410x797px, but you don't need to crop-resize, we'll do it later.

Having in account these considerations, I encorage you to participate with your best compostions.

Here is the link for your reference.

I'm off at college so I've stopped making liveries (for the time being, at least), but I'm continuing to ensure compatibility for the ones I've already published.

be sure to look at the existing screenshots in the c172p's directory... the team spent some time working on those... i think, though, that some taken with compositor enabled FG (especially on or near the ground to show off shadows) might be a GoodThing<tm>...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Question though - if you're going to downsample it to 410x797, then what's the point of going crazy on the multisampling? 1440x960 downsampled to 797x410 already amounts to more than 4x multisampling...

I like the scenery and aircraft model shown in Husky Dynamics' proposals.

I also like epic chicken's proposal of showing the interior of the cockpit,. It sends the message: "get in control of an aircraft!"

BTW, is the last aerodrome Mallorca - Son Bonet?

be sure to look at the existing screenshots in the c172p's directory

I would definitely look at those and try to recreate the best ones with compositor shadows and the clustered shading lighting. Maybe mid morning or afternoon shot. I would stay away from ortho scenery but pick a highly edited default scenery.

Getting shots including the clustered shading would require using the development branch at...

I would also avoid photoscenery and use a good default scenery. Not only to avoid possible copyright issues, also because ortophotos are not downloadable out of the box and I feel including ortophotos would be cheating.

I wouldn't use any image in the c172. Not because they are not good. They are very good, but they will appear anyway when running FG. Check the images in the c172 Preview folder for inspiration. But this thread is an excellent opportunity for a new member to contribute to the project, and restricting the participation to only new images would encourage other community members to participate.

In fact, the installer won't represent the C172 but the simulator. Microsoft Flight Simulator uses a composition of planes and scenarios. Maybe, something similar to that would be a good idea. A composition of images with something exciting and inspiring to show other things apart from the default aircraft. A small aircraf. A big aircrat. A helicopter. The shuttle taking off. This way you send the message "hey, there are other things in FG apart from the ones I'm installing right now!"

Just my two pennies, of course.

I have looked in the wiki , but i didn't find any good picture that match the rule " more vertical size than horizontal " nor a great composition.

Question though - if you're going to downsample it to 410x797, then what's the point of going crazy on the multisampling? 1440x960 downsampled to 797x410 already amounts to more than 4x multisampling...

Multisampling is about filter quality, while 410x797 is refering to the final size that we are going to get after crop + final resize. By cropping we will despise the surrounding area without loosing too much model size.

Thanks for your feedback FG'ers, keep going sharing you pictures. I noticed that most of them have been taken from lateral view 2-3-4 oclock which is not suitable for " more vertical size than horizontal ". My tip to you is that the shot must be taken from 11-12-1 or the opposite angle. Also I noticed that too much zoom won't help to fit the more visible model as possible into that little frame, so using less zoom will help greatly. The management of the vertical axis is key for the composition, but also altitude is important even if you are on the ground or in the sky, this will affect the skill and results of your composition: forefront, midfront, background, spaces, landscaping elements, light an so on.

Also I wish to express that this not a contest and perhaps the best picture in normal size will not match the desired results. Will choose the one with the best result. This picture will represent FG 1rst look on the installer. So must be pristine and seamless. And the composition bust be perfect. We won't stop until we find the best.

Mandatory C172 which is the default aircraft for LTS. I suggested the shuttle taking off for the NEXT. But for now we are going for the C172. In words by James Turner "As noted on the list, please ensure it's a screenshot of the C172 : I don't want a (possibly very nice) screenshot of a different aircraft (which is not included out of the box), that migth confuse new users."

Thank you 29.92 and go ahead.

Here's a few new ones based on the above. Thanks for the tips!
