Simulink-FlightGear Co-simulation for the Visualization of t

The German Aerospace Center (DLR - Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt) uses FlightGear to visualize the trajectory of their new rocket:

Woo!

1) Another evidence that FG is a serious and professional simulation.

2) This makes me sad that FG is used to make real objects that could be designed to kill. Not to re-open an endless and useless debate, but what an irony to people being offended by having virtual rockets on virtual plane for doing a virtual war.

Cheers,
Chris.

i can't help notice the similarity of the design to SpaceX's Falcon 9... the fins at the top are used a little differently but otherwise seems to be very similar to the falcon...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

In this case Simulink is the simulator and FG visualization tool...

that rocket looks like a falcon 9 (my 2nd favourite rocket)

Usage of Simulink will be connected to the research projects (component integration etc.), not for compensating for anything FGFS cannot do with such a pointmass like a rocket.

Indeed a very serious simulation tool we have here.

JSBSim could very likely do that just as well, it is just that more aeronautical engineers are familiar with Simulink.

Ah I see, so the render engine of flightgear is being used with an external physics engine (simulink).

FWIW, they clearly understand how to use the Canvas system and its desktop placement - and they should consider sharing at least the plotting code they're using, as that could come in quite handy for a variety of purposes.

as i have no idea what exactly to ask for i'd suggest someone more familiar with the Canvas system to contact the DLR directly.
The department of Guidance, Navigation and Control Systems can be contacted via this web form.
The video is part a of the research paper Open-Source Visualization of Reusable Rockets Motion: Approaching Simulink - FlightGear Co-simulation citing Marco Sagliano as the author/submitter.
