I didn't make anything, I didn't know whether photo scenery would block airport grass.

I was wondering how LERS looks texturized from low altitudes...

...but you can still identify real surfaces from higher altitudes (remember: this is 4k, not 16k):

I guess (and it is only a guess) that photoscenery blocks materials or not based on shaders and their noise functions.

In these snapshots, airport grass is a custom regional material, not the default airport grass material. You can find this material in southern-europe.xml. Airport grass on southern Europe is a dry surface not completely covered with grass, it has large patches made of dirt and several levels of noise. I guess only some of these levels are blocked by photoscenery.

I can't decide how to use this feature: either huge images in the vicinity of an airport, and using the synthetic textures for the rest of the world to save resources; or low detail photos for most of the world, and synthetic textures in the vicinity of an airport (i.e.: for low altitude flying)

Each tile I've downloaded (8000x4000) has a size of 50MB. I've downloaded 5 tiles in the vicinity of 4 airports, 250MB in total. That's huge, and only useful for taking-off and landing.

It's definitely resource hungry. But no more than MSFS2020.

Here is a video showing a little more scenery from Wichita Eisenhower International KICT heading NW. I wanted to show what the agriculture looked like in reality. Also this is showcasing the Compositor with interior and exterior shadows, OSM2City including animated roadways.
Don't know what the studdering when moving the view is all about. It didn't show that visually while filming, only afterwards did I notice it. It also doesn't do that on my Linux OS.

Personally, I will probably only download a few tiles when I feel like doing some sightseeing in areas I know well in real life. I certainly wouldn't try to cover the whole world.

Unfortunately, I just tried LERS with probably the default scenery and downloaded a 2K/4K photo for the tile. This is exactly what I see at each airport: a dark layer of grass. BTW, the photo is 4096*2048, so is it 2K? I do not know how to download two squares and piece them together to produce 4K.

There was a change in some regional textures two months ago. If your custom regional materials are not updated, this black grass appears.

- Do you have the last fgdata?
- Have you manually changed southern europe or used any external repository for this file? Your runway seems to have much higher contrast than the default runway. I guess your southern_europe is custom and probably still using the old texture files.

In any case, the changes are easy: https://sourceforge.net/p/flightgear/fg ... 59d41bde43

The png file in line 126 of southern_europe must be the new "Terrain/airport_grass_structure_overlay2.png" and not the old "Terrain/airport_grass_overlay.png"

What I'm mostly picking up from this is how nice our own terrain features blend in with the photo scenery. There are no strange anomalies or color differences as far as I can see. The rivers for instance could well have been the ones form the orthophotos, until yo see the sun reflect in them and you realize they aren't.

Not really, up till four months ago I was playing 2019.1 on a win10 tablet with igpu of Atom X5. If well configured, the frame rate can go to almost 20 (which is playable). But, it seems like even only using photo scenery without osm2city is causing frame rate drops on my present machine.

I have the same problem. Maybe it's a Mac/GPU thing (Intel Iris 1536 MB ). I can't find a way of turning off volumetric grass. Is it even possible?

EDIT: this is using 2020.4
