View of Hardanger Fjord, Norway with different clouds

Postby vnts » Mon Sep 21, 2020 8:01 am

I googled for a photo of a fjord in Norway to recreate.

Hardanger fjord, near Nordheimsund, Norway:

Clear skies and shallow blue-ish water:

Sun in view. Note trees against bright glare from the sun and reflection of sunlight from water:

More cloud cover changes the colour of the water and dulls the reflection off the water:

Rainbow:

Thinner clouds let sunlight through. They 'glow' brightly as Mie forward scattering is strong for water droplets:

Thicker clouds will block the sun. Cloud shadows:

This photo is from google/wikipedia [1]. Wasn't able to find the exact location in FG after a very brief glance around Nordheimsund. Looks almost like a scene from FG. I've seen such clouds with sunlight streaming through in FG, a bit like: 2 , 3 , 4

I found a similar looking island and the screens are from [60.41714872, 6.540873379], heading 245 at 775 ft. I changed the time of year a bit. These aren't panoramic screenshots or anything, just quickly changed aspect ratio in windowed mode.

Kind regards

Looks very nice. Is this with new compositor features?

This is just a few quick screens of normal FG. It should be possible to get pretty close to that photo with tweaking (including adjusting season slightly). Cloud shadows, terrain effects, haze etc. are set from weather > detailed weather > advanced settings.

The compositor is mostly an ALS port to start off with - right now it adds shadows for some cases like buildings or cockpits without the high quality ALS shadows.

Kind regards

Funny how we can have these features for ages without people even being aware... :D

Indeed. Looking at the screenshots while you were developing Atmospheric Light Scattering (ALS) was quite a blast. Amazement every week. Thank you.

Okay, I will admit I never realized ALS did cloud shadows. That was what prompted the question.
