Helicopter tour of New York City

Postby montagdude » Sun Sep 20, 2020 5:42 am

With some custom scenery that I will be releasing soon. The osm2city buildings for Manhattan are amazingly dense and beautiful, but unfortunately my laptop could only manage 3-5 fps at that part. Video is uploading as I post this, so please be patient.

Most impressive.

Test this route on NASA computer, please. I'm curious on fps.
I tested Kai-Tak OSM scenery on my R7 3700X with 32 GB RAM and GTX 1060 6GB, fps was 10-12 :( P3Dv4.5 + FlyTampa Kai-Tak on that machine is minimum 20 fps with not very optimized NGXu.

I tested Kai-Tak OSM scenery

The thread title says 'New York City'. Kai Tak Airport is in Hong Kong. Do you realize that's on the other side of the world and you're missing the thread title by more than 8000 miles? Your notorious dissatisfaction with everything is duly noted, but nobody really asked you about your Kai Tak scenery.

I don't have anything better than this laptop to run it on, but you are more than welcome to try. The scenery is all done, and I just have to upload it now, so you will be able to get it soon. This laptop does have a discrete graphics card that is a lot better than Intel HD graphics, but it's still quite slow by most standards.

FWIW: those planes on the roof appear to be AI craft with a bad ground net for the airport layout you're using...

[edit]

i had to laugh because i kept trying to hit F10 to turn off that menu bar LOL

it looks really good! kinda wonder about that power pylon in the middle of the runway at the end, though ;)

"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

I like to test this one, I'm very curious. Where can I download it ? Is it in terrasync ? What FG I need for test ? I have only 2019.1.2.

Dear Thorsten, I do not know how can geographics location affects fps...

Again you completely miss the thread topic - which isn't at all about FPS (I kinda hope you can read what it is about...)

Okay, probably my fault then. I am using the apt.get from fgdata and didn't do anything to the groundnet.

Yeah, I meant to put a comment about that on the video but forgot. At least there don't seem to be any power lines actually going across. TBH, these kinds of little glitches don't bother me that much.

It's not in TerraSync. I will update this thread when it's released. I am running 2020.1.2, but I think it should work with 2019.1.2 also.

Probably You miss that flightsim is flightsim and not powerpoint slideshow. That scenery is very realistic looking, but in case 10 fps unusable. Or should I build helium cooled 10 GHz machine for smooth 30 fps ?

Well, one of the osm2city tiles (1/4 x 1/8 deg) in this area had 467,000 OSM buildings, so obviously it's going to take a certain amount of power to render that smoothly. FWIW I was getting 10-15 FPS throughout the rest of that video, and that is with an old laptop, highly-detailed scenery, and vegetation density set very high, so I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with how fast FG runs. Also FWIW, I tried the X-Plane demo on the same hardware, and it runs like a dog even with pretty low graphics settings. I think it even runs just as well on my integrated graphics card.

Okay, turns out you can't figure out the thread topic after all on your own... So I'll tell you - it's in the 'Media' section of the forum, so it's about a movie that was created with Flightgear, not about Flightgear, and it's about New York (says so in the tread title), not about what FPS you get in Hong Kong.

See, it's not so hard to understand a topic :D (btw. since you complain about every aspect of FG, I don't think anybody really cares about any of your complaints any more... - just use Prepar3D or FSXX or whatever makes you happy, don't spread your permanent dissatisfaction into completely unrelated forum topics - for me FG runs fine)

10fps is right near the limit of usability... it is perfectly fine for 99% of flying in FG... i've done it ever since i found FG like 6 years ago... don't be so spoiled, eh?

Looks fantastic

You should submit the screenshot you posted in the scenery forum [1] for SOTM.

Should run normally under a non-laptop (gaming laptop/desktop) - the laptop already runs OSM2City at high settings on a laptop that struggles to run x-p on low settings without adding full density OSM2City.
V12 wrote in Sun Sep 20, 2020 1:00 pm:I tested Kai-Tak OSM scenery

The only Kai-tak I could find is this historical custom scenery [2] from 5 years ago(??). It's some fs-x scenery converted to x-plane, then to FG. It predates current OSM2City, and modifies effects, shaders etc. Best not to use. It probably won't even work under the future compositor due to file structure changes. You should get Kai Tak from Merspieler's world build if that area has been completed.

2019.1 is a development version that's one and a half years old [3]. It's very early in the development cycle for the LTS, and also known to be specifically buggy. Try 2020.1.2 pre-stable, or maybe the 2020 LTS RC from download.flightgear.org. You can use multiple FG installs in parallel.

Kind regards
