Dear FG-friends,

please allow myself to sidetrack this thread a second.
As this should show off the capabilities of flightgear, it is is reasonable to do so.

This is not a screenshot, but me piloting a motorglider:



Having the pleasure to spend a few hours in that aircraft, the preparation in flightgear was really worthwhile.

Last months I have replicated real world flight training (mandatory flying hours, maneuvers, etc.).

Of course it needs a bit of time to get used to the forces on the stick and to feel the accelerations. And of course judging when to flare cannot be learned on a computer screen.
But knowing what to do and where to focus is extremely helpful.
You will not learn how to fly with Flightgear - but it gives you such a head start for real life experiences.
For me it was just taking over the stick and doing the airwork. The big plus of Flightgear remains the flightmodel.

Thanks a lot for the work on the C172, J3 and PA-28, which are the aircrafts which have taught me a lot. You have done such a magnificent job!


P.S.: Without knowing, what my nickname here is, the flight instructor told me to be less nervous with the stick

Yes you are absolutely right, steering the real thing is quite a different beast! I once had the pleasure of flying a Robin DR400 (link). And it was much easier than FG. I guess mostly because you can feel the slightest change in attitude by the seat of your pants - that's what's missing in a simulator.

And with me it was quite the other way around! I grabbed the stick so tightly that I had sore muscles in my whole arm for a day!

Yes, actually in RL was actually a bit easier than in FG (saying this for VFR. Might be the other way around for IFR)

Con-grads Knüppelrührer,

had my first flight with a Cessna 172 ten days ago. Did a few starts an landings. Unfortunately no photos.
Found it a bit different from FG, but in general I had an idea what to do.
I asked the instructor afterwards how much of the landing I've done and he replied 80%. Sadly he didn't tell me what the missing 20% was exactly.
But he also said that it was obvious that I had some experience before (what was FG).

BTW, @Knüppelrührer: what plane exactly is it, that you've flown? Is it available in FG?

Scheibe SF-25G and Grob G109 come close in principle, although the FDM of each (for example stiffness in roll axis, spoiler effect) could need some work. So I have flown the nice little J3 a lot of time instead

That looks like a nice aircraft! Be sure to take tons of photos, so that maybe some day it will make it's appearance in FG!

Many pictures are very important! We need hi-res pictures from the instruments and panels to model it perfectly.
Also the outside, but moslty we see in the simulation the interior and that shoulb be realy nice and close to the reality.

EDDI is at hold at the moment due other projects (one below;-). First I thought I had a great success with the terrain about 3 months ago, that make it worth to finish it again, but then new difficulties and questions appeared. Guess I have make a new thread to get help with this when I have a bit more time. At the moment RL occupied nearly everything.

Yes - photos are important. In the Cessna I had to fly, so I couldn't take any. But I had access to a real Boeing Stearman, were I took lot's of pictures. So I took the opportunity and pimped the Stearman from Helijar a bit. Made a new cockpit and also add some original sounds. But I guess I need better recording-equipment for this. Took it with my camera.
