Tried it myself with the 1024px version:

Definitely looks amazing, thanks for sharing it! Too bad it can't be included in FG due to licensing.

I think we could include it, but 20MB for a sprite that may be not very welcome for people with old machines /graphic cards. Also, I still need to find where to change the number of points, the moon is quite polygonal with such a zoom :)

I've resized the 1024x2048 version of the texture into 1024x1024 to replace the 512x512 version that is present right now on FG. It isn't that big at all, probably won't hit more than 2MB (I haven't checked), unless you use the 8K version which would be just overkill.
If it can be included it would be a great improvement in realism for sure.

Judging by that texture, I would say moon is defeinitely not flat! :D

Nice! I also just pulled my moon upgrade!

The moon is a 3d model in FG, and you can get hires moon textures under GPL from e.g. Celestia or any other OpenSource astronomy visualizer. You would need a normal map through, because under glancing angles the shading of the craters is by far the most prominent feature - far more prominent than the relatively muted color differences of the lunar regolith.

The reason the texture is what it is is that we do not want to waste GPU memory on something that's really just looked in passing by the vast majority of users.

hello eatdirt and Raptor,
I'm happy you are curious ;)

I setted the sun on the right place for the exposition setting the time of day and I setted the meteo.
I have to progress on those points ;)
I found a background which could look like the one on the photos (hard for the clouds and LOD, my computer is not very powerful)
I climbed to a correct altitude

I hit pause .... :D
(I duplicated the aircraft model before launching the sim) I translated and rotated the model on tree axes.
I set the camera position and the FOV
many adjustments on translation, rotation, camera position and fov

screenshot and crop
that's all :)

It was fun to test the "concept", feel free to try too !

I will try next time to improve the scene (meteo, rembrandt, better terrain detail, add trees, etc)

ET in Orbit:

I was checking the joystick bug on the shuttle & left the joystick trimmed full back by accident which meant that the shuttle pitched up before ET sep - I had to search all over the cockpit for the switch to manually separate & by the time I did the shuttle was high up & at the wrong angle - the ET ended up in orbit with the shuttle :)

There's a key binding...

by the time I did the shuttle was high up & at the wrong angle - the ET ended up in orbit with the shuttle

It always does - you separate with something like 6 ft/s - so you never really go into a much different orbit. Only when you circularize orbit with the OMS-2 burn, you stay up and the ET returns down (and eventually into the atmosphere) - but for half an orbit, you'd usually have it in visual range.

The take-away lesson is - only the MPS can really determine your orbit, even the OMS can just do a few minor corrections to it. :D
