Into The Blue
Image

Hi,
New forum member, began using FlightGear few weeks ago.

Not sure if above image counts as was captured 27th March, does an image need to be captured within the month of the contest?

Details:
Cessna 550, flying in UK

Looking at the image, only two obvious poodles. :)

I like that the Cessna 550 gives a weather report, no need for an umbrella while flying at low altitude (too low - terrain). :D
Had the sound fairly low, had to chuckle thought the Cessna 550 mentioned 'bent candle' (bank angle). :D

Thank you Thorsten (et al.) for such a great simulation!

Dave B, welcome to the FlightGear community! It doesn't matter when the screenshot was taken (and no one here can discover this :D ). Your Cessna looks really nice!

Hi Dave,
Awesome screenshot, and no worries about the date :)

Particularly love the clouds - was that live weather?

(Also, would you mind sharing your settings in Environment > Weather's advanced weather settings, as I haven't been able to get such awesome clouds myself - maybe I was just unlucky with real world weather but it could be my settings :) )

While I tend to work on very visual features, my contribution to the whole is not that substantial, so the 'et al' part is really important.

@Anarcho-pilot - Thank you for your welcome, and compliment. In connection with screenshot date, just wanted to do the right thing.

@legoboyvdlp - Thank you for your kind words, and image capture date information.

- Settings
If remember correctly, yes live weather was enabled.

- Advance Weather Configuration
Terrain Effects - enabled
Terrain Presampling - enabled
Generate Thermals - enabled
Realistic Visibility - enabled
Cloud Shadows - enabled
Air Pollution - around 10%
Fog Properties - around 10%

- Rendering Options
Cloud density - 1.00 (maximum setting)
Cloud visibility range - 150000m (maximum setting)

@Thorsten - From what I've read so far, your contributions are substantial.
Maybe due to my great interest in photo-realistic CGI, I've possibly gravitated more towards threads connected with visuals, having seen your name several times had the impression you were the lead developer. Apologies!

Many thanks :)

I will try using your settings!

(I was under the impression that 3D clouds settings did not affect advanced weather clouds, was I wrong?)

Also, you mentioned CGI, have you an interest in modelling in particular? If you would like to get into development in FlightGear, there are not so many good modellers here - (although the few such as CaptB do a great job!).

this post in the 2018.1.1 3D Clouds always on topic should answer the question... or at least get closer to the answer... asking Stuart might shed some more light, too... i know it helped me understand why i didn't see any changes when i disabled 3D clouds since i always use AW...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

@legoboyvdlp - wkitty42 beat me too it. Yes, with Advanced Weather, 3D clouds are enabled even if the interface setting appears otherwise. You can test this using the following...

- Rendering Options
Cloud density - 1.00 (set to maximum)
3D clouds - un-tick

- Advanced Weather -> with setting such as Core high pressure region, keep clicking Apply until a pleasant cloudscape is observed

- Rendering Options
Cloud visibility range - even though slider appears greyed out due to (seemingly) disabling 3D clouds, changing slider position will still function as expected altering visibility range in real time.

Agree with Thorsten (wkitty42 linked thread), kicking 3D clouds option while AW is enabled seems the best solution, and should help prevent confusion among users as only cloud density & visibility range controls will be present.

As for CGI, yes, modelling, shading, lighting, rendering.
Don't put many images online, but here's a link to one from a few years ago ([img] tags omitted so not to flood SOTM thread with other imagery). Once link opens, click image for full resolution.

Hope adding this link is okay.

Wow, that's impressive! I love the quality. You might like to join a server someone here runs dedicated to CGI, let me ask him if it's ok to invite you. I'll PM you ;)

Thanks for the settings - they worked well ;)

(no problem about the offtopic, as it is related to your screenshot mostly!!)

i'm getting a "521 - server is down" response :?
