FlightGear Screenshot of the Month: May 2017!

Postby dg-505 » Tue May 09, 2017 12:52 pm

Hi! :D

let's get started with the SOTM contest for May 2017!
Sorry for the delay :?

Participation Rules
  1. 15 entries (because a poll can only have 15 options)
  2. Only one entry per person to give everyone a fair chance of submitting a screenshot.
  3. You may enter one extra for somebody else. This person of course can submit their own candidate.
    • If you submit a screenshot of another person, please make sure he/she grants you the right to publish it under the correct license!
  4. Please convert your picture from png to jpg (plenty of converters online).
  5. Has to be taken with FlightGear.
  6. Every picture should have a caption.
    • Please add the name of the aircraft and the location where the screenshotshot was taken to your entry (not necessarily to be mentioned in the caption).
  7. Screenshots must not be post-processed except from cropping and/or resizing (but you may use the in-sim ALS filters).
  8. You may change your entry as often as you want, until the voting starts.
  9. You agree to license your screenshot under the CC-BY-SA 4.0 license for publication by the FlightGear project.

Voting will start when 15 entries are reached or at the latest on April 25, in a seperate topic.

Happy posting ;)
Jonathan

I don't think it's *strictly* against the rules as posted, but I've always refrained from posting screenshots for the competition with features currently under development to give everyone the same chance.

(this looks really good by the way - what technique did you use?)

I actually hesitated about posting it but ended up doing so. Looking back maybe it wasn't the best idea. :? I don't mind changing it at all if any other participants don't find it fair.

The technique is called shell texturing. This is the original paper.

Yes, although the performance hit is around none to 3 fps on my machine. Much better than instancing billboards "tree style".

It is very good, My personal point of view is that it's a screenshot...maybe bending the rules a little. But even so I think it does fulfill the said requirements set out above. I say "let it go this time" as it's a good picture in it's own right.
By all means if anyone else wants to "shout" me down and aim a sub-machine gun at me for this opinion feel free!!!! But well done Icecode GL looks impressive, this would be a nice addition to FG but here comes the "BUT", as long as the FPS wouldn't be affected too much, as everyone that uses FG have a very broad ranges of hardware, and what works well on one machine, could well bring another one to a complete crawl!

I'll just take the easy route and change my entry once I come up with another screenshot I'm happy with. And probably create a thread for this feature on its corresponding subforum as well. That'll be 100% fair.

Everything can be switched off, don't worry about that.
