Interesting - space becomes more populated... How do you navigate it?

Currently, badly. The FDM is yasim-based, but I will almost certainly have to rewrite it using JSBSim - yasim is just too limited to model what I need. It's good enough for a few screenshots though. I don't have any proper instruments either, I'm using Phi, the default HUD, and a crude status display in a canvas window to get an idea of what's happening.

Anyway, the idea is that the spacecraft can fly in 3 different modes, all of them aided by the flight computer: VTOL mode (controls work like in a heli, used for takeoffs, landing, and near-ground precision maneuvers), aero mode (controls work like in a supersonic aircraft, used for climbout, atmospheric reentry, and in-atmo cruising), and ballistic mode (used for anything out-of-atmo: second-stage launch burn, orbital maneuvering, deorbiting, early reentry; also interplanetary travel, but that's not going to work anyway). VTOL works fine, ballistic is mostly fine but suffers from gimballing problems in the auto-stabilizing code, aero is currently hopeless.

In terms of instrumentation, I want something that looks consistent with the things we see on screen, while still being practical.

How much thrust do you give this thing? Is it going to be a 'point and thrust away' affair, or does it involve real orbital maneuvering?

I haven't figured out the right thruster power yet, actually. It's clearly a super heavy monster of a spacecraft, and the main engines alone can hover the thing in Earth-like gravity, so they must be pretty powerful, but at the same time I do want to make it such that getting into any particular orbit isn't trivial. So ideally, the engines would be powerful enough to outdo gravity by a fair bit, but you'd still have to juggle orbital parameters to get onto a survivable reentry trajectory. It's going to need a lot of tweaking before I get that right though.

It's all in the specific impulse - total DeltaV is more important here than maximum thrust - total DeltaV determines what you can do, maximum thrust only how cleanly you can do it.

Anyway - LEO targeting has all you need to quickly see what you can do with what kind of engine setup - and you may want to follow the progress of the (leaner) Nasal version (orbital_targeting.nas) in the Shuttle repository for your navigation needs - no need to develop the wheel from scratch...
