By the way DG-505, would you mind changing the name of this topic to "Flightgear screenshot, etc?" (Search engine reasons=the more good images we can have under the heading of "Flightgear" the better)

Two things about rules:

5. Has to be taken with FlightGear with a non-ai airplane somewhere in it.

Is this really necessary? So if someone takes the UFO and makes a beautiful shot of an airport that isn't allowed? I think we had one of these already.

Also, what about making a rule in which the image has to be untouched (that is, not post processed)? We use these images in our newsletter and I think they should show what FG is capable of, without any help of GIMP or Photoshop.

I agree with this proposed amendment to rule 5.

With regard to post processing, I think cropping is reasonable but no other enhancement. Perhaps also sewing muliple images ino a panoramic shot should be allowed (which is what I think the airport shot did?).

Yep, cropping and panorama techniques are fine. I meant enhancements such as alterations of colour, contrast, adding blur to parts of the image, adding some sort of effects, etc.

At least in my opinion, FlightGear "photography" has much in common with real life photography: A photo/screenshot is never perfect "out of the box". To make a picture look really good, there is often a bit of work necessary. I'm not talking about professional "Photoshopping", but about some small things like correcting whitebalance and brightness settings. This doesn't manipulate the screenshot itself much, but a small enhancement can make a picture look really better, although there is only a very small difference to the "original" photo.

When taking screenshots, I often refer to http://wiki.flightgear.org/Howto:Make_nice_screenshots

That's exactly the point: you are then showing something better (or at least different) than what can be achieved in the sim. IMO, the very definition of a screenshot is, well, a "screen shot", an image of what you see while using the program in question. Nothing wrong with tweaking images in general, but the problem I have with that is that these images go to our wiki and can and will be used to advertise FG.

I honestly think there shouldn't be space for any type of enhancement.

By the way, I know that page and I know the section http://wiki.flightgear.org/Howto:Make_n ... itebalance which I completely disagree with, for the reasons I pointed above. I will suggest that this section is to be removed.

Maybe we should have a vote, if screenshots may get enhanced a bit when using them for the wiki?

If we can't agree on it then a vote might be a solution, although I don't think that having majority on this issue would mean anything. I am pointing out why it's a bad idea to enhance images in our wiki, and I don't know a single argument for why it would be a good idea.

Also, what "a bit" enhanced would even mean? Have a look on what I did in 5 minutes in GIMP, using Richard's screenshot:

Would you say the bottom image represents FG?

Absolutely not.
It is a nice wallpaper, but not worthy of the name "screenshot".
