Actually, not high-end at all, bought the main components two years ago and even back then they were mid-class: i2500k, NV 650Ti, 8GB, Linux with closed source drivers, OSG 3.2, FG next some two weeks old or so.

Wow! I get like 11 fps with a 2012 laptop. And its a pretty good one except for graphics and ram. Anyway, it works for you with high fps so good job!

Been trying to re-create two of my favourite NASA photographs of a shuttle launch.

The first one is from an airplane high up and shows the Shuttle ascending through a relatively dense Cu cloud deck, with the reddish smoke contrasting the white clouds. Here we go:

Image

The second one is a dawn launch seen against the sun, where the flame of the SRBs contrasts nicely with the sky color. Not quite as well, but close:

My laptop is a couple years older and it was the cheapest thing I could find. FlightGear is pretty much not even playable with Windows 7 with all the eye candy turned off. I have mine duel booted so I can run Windows 7 or Linux Mint Xfce. As long as I don't get crazy with the graphics I can get decent frame rates.

Very good screen photos, but the second on can't be Cape Canaveral, it's not flat enough.

It's Vandenberg - it has the 'slick-six' launch site, although that has never been used in reality.

Fun fact, I grew up through 3rd grade near Vandenberg AFB (Lompoc).

Funny story, they used to, and I suppose still do, shoot off missiles from AFB.
Both my parents worked civil service at the AFB. This was during the "cold war" and the story was if you ever saw two birds launched at the same time, it was too late and you needed to kiss your ars goodby. Well I guess they were going to do a special launch of two birds one day and my Mom knew it but my Dad didn't. They were both at home when the birds launched. My Dad about had a heart attack until my Mom finally told him it was a scheduled launch.

I remember many times an aborted launch downrange when something went wrong and all the colors of the rainbow it would leave glowing in the stratosphere.

I used Vandenbburg's strip as a practice area when I was tinkering with the B58's fdm, was easier to use with less MP traffic lags than Travis AFB.

The first one is from an airplane high up and shows the Shuttle ascending through a relatively dense Cu cloud deck, with the reddish smoke contrasting the white clouds.

Yeah I remember seeing that stunning image from my home news webpage, what was really amazing is how tiny the shuttle looked at the head of that plume, the sense of altitude, and yet the shuttle was still below the airliner's altitude a bit.
