Golf on FG?

Postby lomar » Sun Apr 18, 2021 12:46 am

So, in one of my tests for custom sceneries i discovered this fully mapped golf course on OSM data:
Image
OSM has lots of these.
So, i tought, if it would be possible to make a functionality on the walker to play golf, maybe using the ball as a submodel. I just don't know how to model and place the holes in the exact location. What do you think?

It sounds like a lot of fun, but also like a large project.

There are some upsides:
* JSBSim has a ball object FDM
* JSBsim can support a catapult
* FligthGear provides different braking properties to different terrain classes.

I want to have restaurants too!
And simulated hunger, thirst and other, ehhh producing, body functions simulated.
This way we could virtually fly to somewhere, play golf, eat, drink, per and fly back home.

This would be cool as addon.

And having to take a leak while flying. That'll help with immersion! :)

what? you don't keep an empty emergency "gotta go now" soda bottle beside your flight desk?
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

I was thinking about modelling a caddy to use in this project, but found this one

But in all honesty, it would indeed be a cool project to settle some kind of "game" ontop the simulator, leveraging the existing missions-system.
One were you are a pilot in a small air company, getting random missions and having a stake in the plane you fly (start with the c172p, work up to other ones).
The plane should be needed to be maintained according to the POH (engine wear, and overhauls) costing virtual money; as well as refuelling (and of course pressing the "repair" button.
Random missions give you coins, and can vary between tourist flights to express delivery. Bad weather etc will make this challenging, and we should have some cheap "climate simulation" where you can skip time in the hope for better weather (but possibly making you fail time critical missions).

That could be fun, and everything to do something like that is already here - we just would need some nasal components simulating the core stuff, some nice GUIs etc.
and an wear-and-tear simulation of the engine for the c172p (I had something like that in mind for the c182s anyway for long).

In a way we've already done that - the Shuttle has the approach training mode, basically you land, get told what you broke and how long you rolled on the runway, then you can press a button and reset to do it again as long as you like. Made for a nice competition at FSWeekend where different people can do their bit in a row.

Also, there used to be the Halloween surprise doable by the walker, exploring a graveyard.

If this is implemented, it would surely be the first golf simulation to feature AI traffic, realistic weather and a shuttle launching/landing in the background

Many have thought of it, few have tried to implement it. It is absolutely possible to make such an add-on, and it is easier than ever.

For a summary of earlier ideas, see for example Pax and cargo contracts, career and reputation ideas and topics linked to there.

I really wonder why those ideas and projects always died - is there no real demand for this?

I think it is a combination of people speaking of making them but not making them, and no implementations that would give potential users a taste for it.

I have seen someone on Discord mentioned that trying to make something for FlightGear should be seen rather as a marathon than a race, and I think I can fully agree to that.

Most times people only talk about adding something, sometimes someone tries but loose tempo (see my signature below   ). Only a few really get there.

That may be the issue, good ideas!

I think an important design choice should also be that we had some kind of framework, where adding new content (missions etc) should be easy to add, so its easy to extend.
Could probably dine with some kind of specialised xml loaded by nasal or so
