Should we upgrade FG from GNU GPL 2 to GNU GPL 2.1 or 3?

I only skimmed the differences between the two. There are many projects compatible with 3 that are not compatible with 2. Even some OSM projects are version 3 of GNU. :(

I wanted to use the API pf OSM's Open Railway Map https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OpenRailwayMap/API and use the https://www.openrailwaymap.org/ for more accurate railways. I know there already are railroads shown, however this is for different purpose. We already have aircrafts, space crafts, cars, and even ships on FG. However we do not have a train. to add train simulation to FG we would need a more accurate layout of the rail network.

Unfortunately, OSM's Open Railway Map is GNU GPL v3. https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Ope ... p#Software

Simply put: we can´t .
To do so we need the approval from every past and current developers. Which is next to impossible.

But the license is not that important.
If we include some GPLv3 code into the codebase then the project automatically becomes GPLv3. This is because we use the "GPLv2 or later" clause.

And in addition, even a commercial program (one that is sold under a commercial license, not a free one like GPL) can freely use OSM / ORM data - as long as their license permits it.

One other thing Open Street Map use for the data the ODBL licenses ( https://opendatacommons.org/licenses/odbl/ ).
For GPL2.1/GPLv3 are use for there software and this have no influence on the database/datasets.
