License for textures, sounds etc.

Hi,
I wonder what has to be done to get a valid license (GPL?, cc?) for photos, sounds,...
Assume I find something usefull on (youtube, google, ...) and could contact the author.
What should I ask him/her to do? How could he/she release his/her work so it can be included in FG? Is it sufficent to get a permission via PM / email? How must the permisssion be documented?

Regards

good question, I would suggest to get in touch via eMail, linking to the project and the GPL v2 FAQ - and ask them if they have any additional questions.
If they agree, I would suggest to CC the corresponding eMail to the devel list to ensure that this gets archived - and the corresponding commit should ideally also contain either the email body or a link to the archives.

A few years ago, this would be handled by extending the THANKS file accordingly, but that really hasn't been maintained very well - and there are number of major contributors who don't even show up there at all.

Part of the problem there being, that people are hesitant to add (or "maintain") themselves/their contributions to the corresponding file, for all the reasons that Curt explained recently in the other thread (i.e. about self-promotion) - so what some core developers have been doing is adding their peers to the file on a mutual basis.
However, 3rd party contributions (especially artwork) were generally added there until a while ago, and often even mentioned on the website, too.

Given the current situation/modus operandi, I would probably just CC the corresponding eMail to the devel list and link to it in the commit - and add a note about this to the newsletter - once the newsletter is final, I would then send a heads-up to the corresponding artwork contributor - if all this happens to conincide with an upcoming release, I'd suggest to wait a little and get in touch with Curt or Thorsten to ensure that the contribution is also mentioned in the corresponding changelog and release announcement.

But you're right, it would be a good idea to document some "best practices" probably.
Please don't send support requests by PM, instead post your questions on the forum so that all users can contribute and benefit
Thanks & all the best,
Hooray

Thanks for your prompt reply. I sent a PM to check, if the author would generally be willing to release his work / allows me to use it for FG. On positive answer we can check the details....

While I do think that such a discussion probably rather belongs on the development mailing list, I think it would be a good thing to discuss where contributions should be mentioned. It seems there is no formal guideline, which probably add to the confusion on when or not to add proper attribution to the THANKS file or to other places.

For my motives to mention this, see also the topic Published recommendations, guidelines and rules.
