How about a Flightgear Demo?

Postby ZekeAce » Tue Mar 20, 2012 4:11 am

I was thinking ( ), what about a Flightgear Demo? You know, a simple compact program to that could allow curious people to try out the program before spending the time (and hard drive memory) downloading the full program? It could include say, the Cessna 172, 777-300, Seneca, Citation X, and the Beaver (something like that). As for scenery, perhaps it could include say, Bermuda. Or some Caribbean islands (there is some great scenery in the Caribbean!). It essentially would be just removing content from the base package, so it wouldn't be that hard for someone to give it a go. Features such as the Multiplayer can be removed. So...

What do Y'all think? 8)
If it requires effort, then look elsewhere.

I think that is not a good idea:

First, Flightgear isn't that huge anyways. Approx 500 MB. Watch some videos in the net and you have generated the same amount of traffic.

Second, a demo implies there is a payment required to access a full featured version, which is not the case. Maybe new users are not aware of that.

In future, situation might change anyways: Flightgear could become more or less a 'platform' which downloads the content it needs. In fact, life fetched Terrain has already been implemented (a.k.a. terrasync), and eventually aircrafts will be select- and downloadable from online hangars by frontends (e.g. fgrun).

to reduce the size of the initial download, many hard coded features are of little relevance (you mentioned multiplayer), download size will be decreased once scenery and/or aircraft and textures are removed. We previously talked already about "modding" FlightGear to do such things, just do a forum search.
