Shouldn't all aircrafts come with the "flashlight" utility?

Postby Doorknob747 » Sat Mar 25, 2023 5:51 am

The issue with not having the flashlight utility is when using an aircraft during the night time scenery and the aircraft is too dark to see anything. Making it difficult to turn on the battery and/or the lights for the cockpit. Furthermore, it is beneficial for aircrafts when the cockpit lights have not been implemented yet. Thus I think the "flashlight" utility should be listed as a default utility in flightgear.

And what follows from that? :?:

Aka, who volunteers to modify all existing aircraft to make it happen (including discussions with the maintainer who might not want to see this implemented on 'his'
aircraft,...)?

Gotta agree with Thorsten here... I did add the flashlight to the A320 and it was NOT as simple as adding that keybinding.
All objects need to have the right effects on them for the flashlight to work. Took me a couple of hours to work that out for all cockpit elements and exterior.

How about as an addon? It would have to be a different method than ALS flashlight though.

And on top of that you know relatively well how to do that.

A couple of hours x 500 aircraft = Nah, too much work.

too bad there's not a formal template that all craft would use so that updates/fixes like this can be easily scripted and executed from the command line in a minute or two...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."

Not really an option as this would need to go somehow into the rendering pipeline which requires you to assign a suiting effect to all objects (just what I did in the A320)

It is possible that the compositor light can do that in a more generic way (although perhaps with some rendering artifacts, I guess it has the same issue Rembrandt lights always had) - not sure what Wayne has in mind, but it might not be crazy.

You're right, that could work

Yes, compositor lights was what I had in mind. The drawback is they didn't do well for me as a cabin light the last time I tried to use them in that fashion. But I think it would be possible at least.
