Forum rules
In order to help you, we need to know a lot of information. Make sure to include answers to at least the following questions in your initial post.

- what OS (Windows Xp/Vista, Mac etc.) are you running?
- what FlightGear version do you use?
- what graphics card do you have?
- does the problem occur with any aircraft, at any airport?
- where did you download your aircraft/scenery from?
- is there any output printed to the console (black window)?
- copy&paste your commandline (tick the "Show commandline box on the last page of FGRun or the "Others" section on the Mac launcher).

Please report any bugs not specific to an aircraft on the issue tracker.
To run FlightGear on old computers with bad OpenGL support, please take a look at this wiki article.

Note: If you did not get a reponse, even after 7 days, you may want to check out the FlightGear mailing lists to ask your question there.

Is there any map software for FlightGear?

I'm getting frustrated with getting to hunt for maps outside United States

Is there any program that parses FlightGear scenery and displays it as a user-friendly map or any other easy-to-use tool?

Yes, and surprisingly it's called "map"

Not sure how recently this was updated but you might find Builtup airports in Flightgear map to be useful

I think that the Builtup airports map has not been updated for years now.

It shouldn't be that difficult to come up with a handful of heuristics and create a corresponding Python script and add this to the fgmeta repository, so that an up to date map/raster image could be generated automatically (and possibly also hosted in fgmeta), so that front-ends like a launcher could display such a map/image.

Alternatively, even Nasal and the Canvas system could be used to run such heuristics and visualize the results (obviously, that would require the corresponding scenery to be downloaded/available for parsing/processing).

Aside from that, the atlas based map tool (map.cxx) is probably easiest to adapt accordingly, as it is a very self-contained piece of code that even runs in a headless fashion to generate raster images. And in fact, TorstenD mentioned a few times over the years that he was contemplating to use map.cxx and turn it into a CGI so that the corresponding tool/images could be used directly inside fgfs via Phi (mongoose).

Does it still work? I can't get it to work on Windows 10 64-bit. Maybe I need to compile Atlas from scratch for 64-bit OS?

It should, I believe it hasn't really changed over the years - as far as I remember there were a few Windows based contributors who offered/maintained build instructions and precompiled binaries:

Pre-compiled Atlas for Windows XP ?

I have scenery for the continental US and Mexico. Is it even possible on this laptop, and if so, what will I need to do to get it going? Is there a pre-compiled version I can download ? Also what about the "Moving Map"? Is it too complicated for someone as unfamiliar with programing like myself? Thanks in advance if you can help.

It's certainly possible on a laptop. I don't use Windows so I can't help you directly. However, Geoff McLane regularly compiles Atlas for Windows and releases it on his website. The latest one I can find is:
