Guided missile problems (F-16)

Postby lerp_02 » Wed Jan 09, 2019 1:41 pm

Hi!

I am flying the F-16 (standard Flightgear hangar) for a couple of days now, and I really enjoy the plane and its features. However, I don't know how to fire Air-to-ground guided missiles. The problem is probably that I can't (and don't know how) lock on targets. I have the same problem with the Air-to-air guided missiles (even though I can fire them, but they aren't guided or locked on a target).
It would be very nice if somebody can help me out. :D

(by the way: I am running Flightgear 3.1 on Windows 8.1)

Hi,
I suggest updating FlightGear to 2018.3.1 for a start.

This is what the help menu (?) says:

Code: Select all
RELEASING ORDNANCE
First mount some armament.
Secondly make sure masterarm is enabled.
Thirdly select the arm. (use 'w' key or click buttons 'A-A' or 'A-G' under HUD)
Fourthly make sure target is selected (key 'y')
For GBU-12 and GBU-24 make sure laser is armed.
For GBU-12, GBU-24, GBU-31, MK-82, MK-83, MK-84 when getting close a vertical line will appear in HUD. Align flight path indicator on the line, when a small horizontal line on that line starts dropping down and reach another line then its time to release (key 'e' or 'trigger').
For AIM-120 the trigger can be held for 2 second to fire it without a lock in MADDOG mode, where it will lock onto anyone it sees. This feature is still not entirely bug free so do this on own risk.

Note that I am using the development version of the f16, but as far as I know the standard f16 was updated not that long ago from the development version.

My Flightgear version was already 2018.3.1, I forgot to mention the 2018-part.

The A-A missiles are working now :D , but the A-G missiles still don't. Maybe it's due to wrong targets, I havent got any addons for tanks or any other potential targets, I have only tried to lock on passenger planes on the ground. The selected plane is marked with a bigger square, but the small horizontal and vertical lines don't show up in the HUD. (settings; armament selected, MASTER: ARM and LASER: ARM)

Yeah, you need a proper target to lock on. I'll try and get you an invite to the OPRF discord if you like, we are a server dedicated to multiplayer combat? We have various 'assets' (depots, tanks, etc).

For the bombs like gbu-12 the lines will only show up when you get with a certain distance of the target.

As for the AGM-65 needs a lock transfered from the targetpod (TGP).

Before takeoff, make sure to mount a TGP.
When flying, target something and have the agm-65 selected with masterarm on.
Then click TGP on a MFD display.
Then click RDR to get it to point in the general direction of the target.
Use the direction buttons to adjust and lock it.
Then click XFER to transfer lock to the missile.
Click back button to get back in cockpit view, and fire it.
Repeat the XFER in the TGP view if you want the target transfered to the next missile.

This procedure is only a placeholder for now, it will get more correct later.

Thanks for the procedure, it will help me when I want to fire a AGM-65.

The link would be nice, could you send it to me in any way?
