What's this VA business?

Postby chris_blues » Thu Jul 11, 2013 3:20 am

Hi all!

I'm just curious! Could someone please tell me, what this virtual airline thing (in general) is all about??? What are you people doing? Why do you do this? :?:

Thanks
chris

A virtual airline (VA) is basically an extension to your flight simulator that simulates being a pilot of an airline :)
There are certain benefits to flying for a VA, specially if you like flying passenger aircraft (737, 747 etc.) including but not limited to:
- getting a structure to your flying instead of randomly flying here and there
- having your hours logged and counting towards a goal (getting higher rank, achieving awards etc.)
- access to certain facilities like fuel & route planning
- some VA's offer training or other educational aspects, so you can learn new skills
- last, but not least, being part of a community. Most good VA's have a forum and chat facilities where you can meet other pilots

Long story short: where Flightgear simulates the actual flying itself, a VA can simulate all the business around flying and give you ideas and inspiration to fly to certain places. Have a click on the link in my signature to see how a good VA should look like, what it does and how it works :)

Thanks for your explanation!!!
Very interesting! I'll certainly have a look around! Is there some wiki-page or sth to read more? http://european.virtualairlines.eu looks very nice so far!

One thing I don't understand, since it's all about flight sim, why does it seem to me, like there is a lot of rivalry among those VA's? Isn't it just about the fun of flying? Or do I get it all wrong?

Cheers
chris

the rivalry between flightgear VA's is because there seem to be more people interested starting their own VA than people actually flying for them :)

Ok, maybe that's a bit exaggerated but definately the market for VA's in flightgear is saturated and some VA's are struggling to gain interest. Also, there's a lot of "kids" running these VA's, and a lot of people with a wrong temper. It's one of the reasons why I very rarely post my VA here.

I haven't come round to making a page on the flightgear wiki, but all the info you'd need is on the site anyway. If u got any questions just PM me or use the contact form on the site.

But these are not all airlines: Air Europe (http://aireuropevirtual.jimdo.com) is a VA special for Europe, Pakistan International Airline (http://www.piafgva.x10.mx) is a virtual airline for Pakistan... and Virtual Air Canada (http://virtualaircanada.x10.mx/) is a VA for Canada,USA... ;)

Thanks folks, for the infos!
I'll look into it as soon as I'm back home. Being in the lucky situation to enjoy the Baltic sea! 8)
Tried wind surfing yesterday. Funny application of my understanding of aerodynamics :)
so I'll get back to it next week...
Cheers

Most of the active Va's in FG are open for all simulators, BRT (www.brtvirtualairlines.com) is strictly only Flightgear, and the best one if we're talking about pure FG va's. Others are also good but have at least a portion of pilots flying in FS and X plane.

We changed to Jazz, not Air Canada anymore. We focus more on Canada and we'll focus a bit on the US but will try a lot. ;)

All I need as of now is someone to help make the design. We're trying to figure a professional design that'll make it somewhat look like the real site

EDIT: There's also http://flymerlion.org/, most successful VA in FG. Most pilots too almost 1000. We allow all simulators for everyone to have fun! But mainly based on FlightGear.
We have 1-5% of our pilots who Do not fly in FG. Most of them fly both. (FlyMerlion)

Actually, we had almost 1000 registrations so far but there were a few spambots. The spambots and inactive pilots were removed from our roster putting us upto just about 200 pilots. :)
