The always great C172p cockpit improvement!!

Postby horacio » Fri Nov 26, 2010 3:49 pm

Hi to everyone.

As I promised in my topic of BO-105, I've started my own improvement of the cockpit of our always dear and first old school to many of us: the C172P.

At the moment the status of changes includes only re-textures of:
- Entire panel
- Throttle and Mixture handles, and Switch magnetos
- Yokes
- Parking brakes
- Pedals
- Glass effect on frontal window.

Besides re-textures, I added original text signs, shadows, light shines and dirtiness to the plastic, to add more realistic details. All textures are photorealistic, taken from original Cessnas.

My desired list to do:

Re-texture of:
- Instruments (including glass effect)
- Floor
- Seats
- Chassis
- Better resolution and details of default livery.

Some pictures to compare:

Actual status

I know there were a user that have done some changes to instruments, but he only used a better resolution of actual ones. I will develop them with better image effects, adding contrast and equalization of colours, or even in some cases using some more real ones, and adding them glass reflection effects.

Many of us owe to this great plane.

Regards.

Agreed. :D

By the way, what airport/air base are the screen shots taken at?

Looks good. My only wish to the instruments glass effect is to make it more subtle as it was on the bo105. In real life the glasses are made coated to prevent reflections as much as possible. Looking straight on you won't notice any reflections. Only looking from the side you will see usually some reflections:

Hehe... that airport is SCVM (Viña del Mar - Chile), an airport in development by me (Horacio has an incomplete, little bugged version)... it's coming soon! All hangars have interactive doors. :)

Thanks for all of your comments. Having hundreds of airplanes in FG, it's time to begin having at least the first ten completed ones.

I'll keep it in mind, even I think that glass effect in BO instruments is not disturbing in any way, and you can see easily all values involved. Even existing modern glasses to reduce reflection in real life, using reflection as a glass effect is the best way to make things appear more real in 3D simulation, at least in simple graphics light emulations, not like rendering tools.

HHS wrote:Looking straight on you won't notice any reflections. Only looking from the side you will see usually some reflections:

This is not always true. If you have the sun in front of you, and you are looking straight to them, you will see anyway your face reflected, even having anti-reflection layer and rough surfaces to reduce reflections. And this is very often while flying. Remember that reflections depends on the angle of incidence of the source of any light with reference to you, and not of the point of view that you are looking to.

Anyway, C172p is an old fashion plane, doesn't it? hahahahaha.... Don't worry, I'm trying to play devil's lawyer with you. It'll be as subtle as possible.

Really nice horacio!

Here is my own C172P cockpit update on Polish forum.

And screenshots:

Hey, Zbyszek, nice coincidence!!!! (well, not too much, because it's obvious)... that before begin all my changes I did a try with the grey texture, looking at the newer panels in the C172, and added such remarked grainy at the grey plastic, just like you, but finally preffered to improve the actual version. Unfortunately deleted the screenshot was done, because thought that never used it. Indeed I want to modeled the newer grey panel, but not only the textures adding textures to the actual one, if not the new distribution and design of it. I find it much more elegant and modern than the actual old cream colored one.

Thanks a lot for your version. I'll look at it, and will see what could be useful.

@Zbyszek: I'm very surprised that this is the first time in FlightGear that I see a map or some papers between the glare shield and the canopy. It seems to be a rather common way fighter or attack pilots stow their maps during flight.

It's widely common in VFR "pleasure" flights, like the most of the Cessnas (wich are not militar planes). Look at this example:

Yep, of course and I was always looking for a way to add this to my aircraft, but my graphical knowledge is weak about that.

Remember that reflections depends on the angle of incidence of the source of any light with reference to you, and not of the point of view that you are looking to.

It is all relative, isn't it?
