request to the airplane makers - Paintkit

Postby Timaman » Fri Jun 04, 2010 8:10 pm

Hi

Easy simple request here to EVERYONE making an airoplane for FG
Please create it with a Factory Fresh livery included with any other liverys
This means a plane (haha) white livery WITH detailing like rivets, bolts, doors and any other markings that show the building details of the plane, and place them on a separate clear layer.

This is done on Il-2 sturmovik and is called a "Void", and it makes for the easy creation of realistic looking liverys for any plane.

Thanks for reading

Not only IL-2, other sims as well. They call it "Paintkit". Helijah and some others are already doing it- and I planned it as well.

Hope some others will follow though it needs some more work.

Is there a list of planes that incorporate the paintkit?

I strongly second the request! This is definitely something that ought to be made "standard practice". Think of the Paintkit as the graphic "source code". Under GPL you're required to provide source code to a computer program, so (though not required by the GPL), please offer the same to graphic artists! It is terribly frustrating to have to erase "paint" while tediously recreating the underlying panel lines, etc.

Going one step further, for instruments, if you design the dial faces in a vector format such as SVG, include those files too, so others can modify and enhance them.

FYI, I'm working on a "paintkit" part in the livery database, so we can collect all kind of paintkits. Take a look at http://liveries.flightgear.org/paintkits.php

However, I do believe that paintkits should end up in Git...

Hi

I will therefore repeat the information here as it seems not to be understood :?

All my planes are avaliable with their file "PaintKit" !

This file is always named: "texture.xcf.gz"

This is a file in "the Gimp" format, but Photoshop can open it. It contains different layers, one with the different profiles of UV Map.

Best regards. Emmanuel

For the F-16 there is a F16-GenericAssemblyLines.xcf file in Models/Livers

Hi Everyone,

I've been working with Emmanuel (Helijah) to create a few new liveries for the Alpha Jet and the CL-415 and I can tell you that his including the multi-layer GIMP file is absolutely wonderful!!!! :D It makes my life a lot easier, for example I took the basic Armée de l'Air livery for the Alpha Jet and substituted the green for white now I have a clean slate to work with.

I noticed Skyop did the same for his CRJ-900 and if at all possible when you develop a new aircraft could you please include the un-merged GIMP file??? I think it will improve the overall quality of the liveries people will produce, I know my Top Aces Alpha Jet's will definitely benefit from this.

Another information that may interest 439Tiger, it is possible to change the size of texture without having to redo the UV map.

For example, all my paintkit are provided in 1024x1024. But nothing prevents you achieve the texture of 2048x2048 (or 4096x4096 .. um .... finally there is really big lol)

Of course with a great texture, the details are finer. But the resources needed will be larger.

You can see the difference on my Caravelle example . She has multiple textures in two versions (high - 2048x2048 and low -1024x1024 ) or my TBM Avenger.

Regards. Emmanuel

On-topic: I have created a tutorial for making paths in GIMP (you may be able to "transfer" this tutorial on other image programs). You way want to try this out for easier painting your liveries. As this tutorial was created with the new CRJ700-family airplane, please try it out to make a livery for one of the 700,900,1000 (or all?) airplanes.

Feedback on success and failed attempts are warmly welcomed but limited support because I'm no professional designer. :)

Are current "best practices" for this documented somewhere? The reason I am asking is that I am working on new 3D models for my aircraft and when the 3D models get to a certain point I will be setting up things like UV maps, textures, bump maps and reflection maps which will lead to a paint kit in the end. I have looked around on the wiki and other places for information on how to do this and so far have found only fragments but nothing that could be considered an overview that covers the whole process. The fragments that I have found only cover perhaps 30% or 40% of the whole process perhaps less and much of the information seems old/outdated.

My new 3D models are being built using factory blue prints and are very accurate and highly detailed. I would like the paintkit, UV map, textures, bump map and reflection map stuff to be of a comparable quality. So any information concerning best practices would be really helpful. In addition, if someone with a high level of expertise in this area is interested in assisting please contact me via a PM.

Before going any further: what program are you using, AC3D, Blender or something else?

I cannot say if I have a high level of experience in modeling and uv-mapping. Try out my MD-11 and decide yourself. Finnair, KLM, FedEx and Swissair liveries are made by me, and I've also tried to add some bump maps in it ;) I may could help you a little.
