The only way I was able to view the texture/livery was to replace "pain1.png" with the new texture. In fact, the only way I can change the livery to even a default one is to rename its texture file to "paint1"
yeah, it seems that
http://wiki.flightgear.org/Howto:Edit_a_livery#Editing_the_livery_XML_file is a ""little short"" (huge understatement) on details...
using the c172p as an example, there is a Nasal/liveries.nas file which is referenced in the c172p-set.xml file... that nasal file starts and loads the livery system via the aircraft.livery.init() function call... there is also in gui/dialogs the c172p-menu.xml which contains an option to select the livery... it does this via the aircraft.livery.dialog.toggle() function... when this dialog is up, you can select from the available liveries... when done, close the dialog... all the liveries for the c172p are in the Models/Liveries directory with some liveries having their own directories... every livery has its own xml file in Models/Liveries... (eg: mylivery.xml)
i've played with liveries for a couple of other craft and they were even more simple once i found the place where the liveries were specified... i don't recall the specifics but they were manually coded in the nasal instead of using the built-in livery system... if the craft already has multiple liveries, it should be easy to find where they are specified and add yours to the list... if the craft doesn't have any liveries other than the one it comes with, then you'll have to add the selection capabilities to the craft's files...
"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."
