Bare Metal

Postby daveculp » Fri Jan 09, 2015 4:41 am

Can anyone tell me what the state-of-the-art is for bare metal finishes in Flightgear? Better yet, can someone point me to a model which uses the state-of-the-art?

I presently use two kinds of bare metal finishes:

1: light gray texture with panel lines, rivets and placards painted on
2: The chrome shader, with other painted surfaces hovering slightly above

I take it these are supplanted by a better way now?

Hi Dave I'll point you to the electra for chrome shader, and IAR80 for rivets. Hope you'll find good effects on them.

P51d looks very nice if you set the model shader slider to maximum.

You should use model-combined-deferred.eff, which allows you to switch on selectively what functionality you need - it supports a normal map, a reflection map, a lightmap, a dirt map (and under ALS only) a hires grain overlay and raindrop splashes on the surfaces....

So I guess for bare metal you'd use reflection and normal mapping.

You should not use the chrome effect, because this is supported by the default renderer only and doesn't work under Rembrandt or ALS.

I'll look into those effects, Thorsten. Will I be the first to do this?

No, you are not first.

But at least on the wiki there could be some more documentation than there is on the stub I created: Model-combined effect. Most articles still refer to the older, now obsolete shaders of which some could only be used one at a time (aircraft reflection shader, normal map, lightmap, etc).

I've been using the Citation Bravo to test the ALS version of the shader, I think it has a nice metallic effect. There's probably many more planes. The standard reference used to be the IAR-80, but that has been deleted from the repository by its author (it's still on the older download pages though...).
