Graphics Tips and Tricks

Postby gooneybird » Sat Apr 09, 2011 1:58 pm

Hopefully this topic will encourage people to post their various FlightGear related graphics tips and tricks using various graphics software.

It is not intended for beginners tutorials, there are plenty of those on the net, but for those with some knowledge of the software involved.

So, to start it off here's how I do two coloured door outlines in Inkscape:

Any feedback or suggestions are welcome but please do it nicely

Excellent topic Brett, I will study it closely, I'm having a bit of trouble transposing my knowledge of Gimp to Inkscape...I couldn't even put a rectangle around an object last time I tried.

In Gimp I would have done a rectangle select then a "bucket fill" of the individual areas:

But it's the rounding the corners trick that I will have to investigate

Don't
As it is so different to Gimp it is better going in with a open mind and no preconceptions.

Here's some links that will help:

The basic interface (videos) with links to more advanced projects: http://screencasters.heathenx.org/microsodes/
These are really a "must watch" if you are starting from scratch.

Thank you so much for all this great information, I just went and had a quick look and Inkscape does seem to be a lot more powerfull than Gimp, just the fact that you can easily round corners is a really big plus. :D

Probably the best there is is a combination... maybe? I don't know as I only use gimp, but if you used inscape for the more inkscapey parts and Gimp for the gimpy parts, that would probably rule...

@ Bravo 123,

I'm looking to see if there is a file format that uses layers that both programs recognize so that I could go back and forth, so far no luck... :(

At the moment I'm using Gimp mostly, I think I might switch to Inkscape eventually, I watched the first video, they are very well made. :D There is on thing I personally real like with Gimp that I want to reproduce in Inkscape, I haven't found it yet but I hope it's there. I like my transparent layers to be transparent and not white, I'm sure it's there, I'll have to read some more.

How to create the impression of raised ribbing used for control surfaces etc.

I guess you either meant "to get her" or "to get there". Anyway, it's the technique that matters :D
