Depends on which exact shader you used...
With the Bump-Spec-Reflection-shader this is controlled by the alpha layer- remove them to have less specular effect.
With the simple reflection-shader you can't really influence.

Code: Select all
<inherits-from>Effects/reflect</inherits-from>
tells it. It is the simple shader. The JU52 makes use of the bump-spec-refelction-shader. But be aware of the fact that the later one only works on uvmapped surfaces (textured surfaces).

So I guess, it's out of the question... and there's no way to changed that specular reflection... :?:

Just use the other shader for the fuselage. That should work.

Right now I'm drawing the chrome parts. I'm having trouble with the pixels... I'll be coming back to that thing with the shader!
Image
I haven't cut the chrome parts out of the greymap, so they are not so shiny as they will have to get. I decided to cut it out, when I'm finished placing the pixels on the livery...
When I erase these subpixels/shades of grey on the borders, it becomes very cornered, like on the door.
When I use shades of grey it looks like spraypainted, like on the cockpit's wind-screen.

How can I make the borders more straight?

Update:
Now I'm working with gradients in the pixel-corners... I'm pushing around nearly every pixel around the cockpit-windows...

Check that you have antialias enabled (in the selection toolbox in Gimp, the same place where you set the Threshold), also you can use some feathering 1-1.5px.

I took me almost the whole day to set the pixels right...
(I've updated the pic some posts above.)
Now all chrome parts are represented in the greymap as well.

I guess I'm ready to begin on the shader/color problem...

Any ideas, how to get the black better/truer?

Let's take a look at that greymap first ;), maybe we can work with that

how does this look ? ;)
pic:

greymap:

adjust these in the .eff file:
Code: Select all
<fresneliness>0.3</fresneliness>
   <noisiness>0.0</noisiness>
   <refl_correction>0.3</refl_correction>
   <ambient_correction>-0.1</ambient_correction>

and this in the citation-II.xml from, although this is optional, depending on how the other liveries look:
Code: Select all
<shininess>16</shininess>

to:
Code: Select all
<shininess>24</shininess>

I copied your greymap into the plane. Looks quite nice! But --- what exactly have you done?
I had the background white and opacity 50%, with the chrome-parts overlayed, white 100% opacity. I didn't have the engines parts in it. Plus I took out the mask-layer, with the construction lines.
Whatis it in yours? I saw some cloudy texture on the wings and body, what is it? :) And what does it do in effect?

Code: Select all
<shininess>24</shininess>

was already set.

Edit:
I found out, why the gradients don't look so nice! F.e. the passenger door. On the vertical frame I used gradients from white to transparency. On the corners I used gradients from white to black. So, when I put this on the greymap, it appears cornered, not smooth. I guess I've got to exchange the grey-gradients with transparence-gradients... This might take a while... ...stupid me...

I've increased the transparency of the other parts of the texture, I'm thinking it's about 80% now. Also the color is a dark grey in all the areas where there isn't any chrome parts.
The "cloudy" part is just some plasma filter aplied, just to break the eveness of the texture apart.
You can see how the texture really looks like by doing as folows:
In the layers box, rightclick the layer -> add layer mask, select from the options Transfer layer's alpha chanel.
A new thumbnail apears next to the original one for the layer. That's your transparency channel (or alpha chanel as it is known).
If you fill this channel with white, you'll make the whole texture opaque.
If now you rightclick the layer and select apply layer mask , you'll get the original texture I've worked on.
To get back the transparency (or to set the transparency right for a similar texture), just do Colors-> Color to Alpha and there select black as the color.

Btw, from looking more carefuly at the pictures of the original aircraft, I'm thinking it's color is not pure black, but a very very dark blueish green.
Something like #010a08.

I would have never guessed that there's a blue/greenish touch to that black!
Coming closer to it...

Is this zpositive from the cubemaps? Looks like clouds or sth...
If yes, what did you do to it? Just scale it to 1024x1024 and set opacity to, don't know, like 3% or sth? Oh, and then transfer to alpha channel?

I've found it. -> Filters -> render -> clouds -> plasma ... :)

Update:
Now I've used a completely desaturated cubemap. This makes the hull a little more neutral in refelction-colors...
