FG 2020.3.8

Postby kemosabe » Fri Apr 02, 2021 3:52 am

Hi all. Three questions re latest update.
I have searched around and am unable to find out what FG 2020.3.8 is all about; specifically, is it worth updating from 2020.3.6.
Also, I'd like to know whether installing updates like FG 2020.3.8 require resetting preferences and mapping yoke, etc.
Finally, am wondering if it's good practice to trash older versions. I've been saving five or six older FG versions.
Thanks.

Here's the changelog:
https://wiki.flightgear.org/Changelog_2020.3#2020.3.8

For the minor updates of the same version (e.g. 2020.3.6 and 2020.3.7) there is usually no need to keep them around. That is mostly about bug fixing.
You could keep the previous version around just in case there is a regression but if it works then I see no need to keep it any longer.

This I'm not sure about on Windows so I'll leave it for someone else to comment on.

Eric, thanks.

From your reply, I take it 2020.3.8 is not a critical update. For newbies like me, it'd help if FG release carried a short explanation as to what's new and whether it is critical.

I think it did not happen this time because James needed a bit of a brake from FligthGear after this release.

But as a general rule: the minor releases like 2020.3.x and bug fixes only and updating is only required if you experience a bug.
If you do experience a bug then it's recommended to switch to the latest point release (as they are called) and see if it still exists before reporting the bug.

Off course you may always upgrade, but it's not required in those cases.

"You get more air close to the ground," said Angalo. "I read that in a book. You get lots of air low down, and not much when you go up."
"Why not?" said Gurder.
"Dunno. It's frightened of heights, I guess."
