sRGB problem

Postby dilbert » Sun Jun 24, 2018 6:35 pm

Have 2018.2.2 installed on 4 machines, all running on WIN 10.

So far, all features work perfectly on 3 of the 4.

The exception is my Dell Celeron N2830 4GB laptop.

On that machine, path establishment for scenery and hangars has never worked-if I attempt to
establish a path, the program crashes, with the log showing:
gui:4::0:libpng warning: iccp: known incorrect sRGB profile.

This same problem existed with previous versions of FG.

However, I could fly a particular route from a given airport with Terrasync on; and subsequently fly the same route, using the same airport, with Terrasync off; and the scenery previously downloaded to my Terrasync folder would rapidy load, without re-downloading from the server.

In 2018.2.2, it's no longer the case: when I go to the same airport, scenery re-downloads from the server irrespective of the fact that "automatic scenery downloading" is switched off.

Would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions, as to how situation might be remedied.

you can ignore that... it is nothing but a warning and only exists because of the libpng library you're using... i forget if it was something from a newer or older version of the lib but it has nothing at all to do with your problem...

are your scenery paths still correct in the new FG?

as for turning TS off, there's a bit of a catch-22 here... so you have to walk a bit of a twisted path to fix it... this is because FG caches the settings when it is properly shutdown to make it load faster the next time... so here we go...

1. in the launcher, make sure TS is turned off
2. in the sim, make sure TS is turned off
3. exit the sim properly eg: F10->File->Quit OR just hit [ESC] until the "do you want to exit" box pops up and then select [Exit]...

now when you go back into the sim, TS should be turned off... should be...

FWIW: there was some discussion about this on the mailing list in the last few weeks... some work is being done to alleviate this and other similar situations so that the launcher settings are taken over those that may be cached...

Thanks for the reply. No, a path for my alternate, as opposed to Terrasync, scenery file was never established on this machine, as I had relied on the launcher for establishing same-which crashed the program, for some unknown reason. Not being overly computer adept, I did not pursue trying to establish a path to an alternate scenery directory by other means; but relied instead on Terrasync. Also, establishing scenery paths on my newer machines, using the launcher, never presented a problem.

This machine was of some use when it immediately loaded established Terrasync directory scenery files with auto loading off, as it did with earlier versions of FG. Now, with it wanting to re-download every time, even when usable files are resident in the Terrasync directory, it has little practical use; as download times are quite long.

Thanks again for the reply and Best Regards.

it almost sounds like it has gotten far enough out of sync that it is pulling in quite bit... i would probably clean it up and do the scenery download again... but maybe if your machines are connected on a network, you could just copy the files you already have over to the older machine...

i use the command line python terrasync.py script to maintain my scenery... i run it at least once every couple of days... there's almost always something to be downloaded...

for example, the day before yesterday, 20180622, i got these...

Re: sRGB problem

Postby dilbert » Mon Jun 25, 2018 10:16 am

Have already copied scenery files to C:\Users\{name}\Documents\FlightGear\Scenery using extraction method.

The problem is that I can't enter this path using the add-on feature of the launcher, because it causes the
program to crash on the Celeron (Dell Inspiron 3531 with Windows 10 Home Version 1803) laptop. The same thing happens if I try to enter a path to my hangar.

The sRGB message in the log was the last entry at the time of the crash. All prior entries represented successful executions. If it is irrelevant, haven't got a clue as to the cause.

On Intel I3 and AMD A4 desktops and the AMD A8 laptop the path adding feature in the launcher works fine.

The 2018.2.2 installer was downloaded on the I3 machine and copied to others by zip stick, so there should be no program difference between machines. Seems more like a windows or hardware issue on the Celeron. The strange thing is that all other features of FG work perfectly-only the path establishment routine in the launcher fails.

Thanks for the help.

Best Regards

P.S. Is there an alternate way of creating these paths without using the launcher add-on routine?

Wild guess, the file dialog is crashing (the sRGB error is really unrelated, sorry). Have you got any weird vendor plugins into WIndows Explorer on the laptop? Sony is bad for this, Dell is slightly bad. Basically anything that adds extra 'stuff' to the file dialog (across the whole system - not just Flightgear). The problem is these can trip up the program when we ask to choose the path.

Such things can be plugins that add networked drive to the file dialog, or a photo sharing service, or a NAS.

Thank you. Sounds likely. Not aware of any unusual apps, but could be a Dell app. will check it out. Appreciate the tip.

Well, at least the automatic scenery downloading with switch off problem is resolved. I had started multiple
times with automatic downloading switch confirmed as being off; yet auto downloading happened anyway.

Went to File>Scenery Download and found "x" in Enable automatic download/update box; even though
automatic downloading switch had been "off" in launcher. Removed "x" and restarted. Thereafter,
scenery has correctly loaded without re-downloading, switch in launcher having been off. :) Can't explain it, but might have been related to initial start up.

To wKitty42: In deed you did so. Thank you. Was still worrying with the path problem, and just got around to addressing the switch. Appreciate the help in resolving same.

By the way, I noted on a good machine that with the launcher switch off auto scenery kicked in
automatically when I flew into an area where scenery had not been installed-a very nice
improvement over defaulting to the blue tiles. Also, when I restarted in an area with scenery,
switch off loading occurred in normal fashion. :D :D

On the bad machine (Celeron) this did not occur: got the blue tiles, as of old. Suspect this is related to the path problem. Also think Zakalawe may have identified the possible cause, though have yet
to identify an app culprit.

Thanks again for the help.
